Enough with the 2300+ scores!

Yes, I'm jealous of you all. I admit it.

Do any of you (2300s excluded) want to jump off a cliff after receiving your SAT score? I feel horribly dumb now. I did worse on this SAT than anything else. Even PSAT said I'd be nowhere near this low.

Math: 500 (I know math stinks for me...but that much?)
Reading: 580
Writing: 560
Total: 1640

I'm in shock that I didn't break any 600s. Has that happened thus far on any practice tests? Yes. Every single one...And, the fact that math + reading is so low (1080?!?!?!). I never have gotten so low, not even on the very first practice test I took...it's been high 1100's - 1230s. AHHHHHHHHH!

I promise, I'm not suicidal, despite what this sounds like. I'm just incredibly upset at myself.

Sorry if I offended anyone (the 2300s), I truely do envy you guys.

don't worry! i'm in the same boat as you are; i'm looking at all these 2200+ scores, and i'm thinking, 'wow, is that the norm?" i didn't hit the 2000 mark either. on a practice test at my school, on the writing section, i got a 780! on the SATs, i got around a 650...i'm definently going to have to retake the SATs...but i have to take the SAT IIs first...during AP exam week!

dont worry half the people on this board are nonstop studieers and are obsessed with grades...if they dont get into any ivy league then their lives are over...and the other half are lying

tru dat.
These people here who said they have 2300+ are the minorites among all the test takers. So beleive me, there are others that did worst.

If you manage to find these forums and get help, you are already smarter and brighter than the grand majority of most students anyways, who many of them rarely seek help and just take the SATs unprepared ;) :)

hey... i took the sats unprepared... haha

Eh, don't sweat it. Yeah, I have friends who scored in that grade range, but I also have plenty of friends who didn't; its not the end of the world. I also had a friend who got a 780 in math, and a 760 in writing, but then a 500 in reading. So, that's the only reason he broke the 2000 mark. I myself, am taking subject tests during AP week, and probably the ACT in june. I don't think I want to take the SAT again. I scored "ok" on it. I'd rather not say for fear of being stoned; but, nevertheless, those of you that persist on taking the SAT--good luck.

if you combine my SAT II writing with my SAT, i would have 2340, and I didnt get into 5 out of 7 schools I applied to, SATs really dont matter much.

SATs DO matter, but not as much as you might think. If you are good in other things beyond the SATs, then don't sweat it (as much).

"dont worry half the people on this board are nonstop studieers and are obsessed with grades...if they dont get into any ivy league then their lives are over...and the other half are lying"

See... I'd normally post to sympathize with the OP, but its idiotic crap like this that makes me angry. Do I really need to be stereotyped because I have a 2300? I didn't study for the SAT, I'm anything but a nonstop studier obsessed with grades (and mine reflect this well) and I could care less about getting into an Ivy? So maybe stop and think for a minute next time you say stupid shti pepgirly14. Thanks.

I'm going to go on a limb and agree with tetrahedron. I mean, pepgirly "are nonstop studieers and are obsessed with grades" then--why are did you post an SAT sample essay? Well, you're obviously not indifferent. You seem to be quasi obsessed with your grades with that respect. I like sitting the fence. Sorry if I offended anyone.

Ugh, ACT anyone? Well, unless you're dream is to attend Princeton, take the ACT.The ACT and the SAT are the synonymous--testing rudimentary math skills, writing skills, and reading skills. The ACT constitutes a science section, and when placed in juxtaposition with the SAT is more well, straitforward. The SAT tests the same questions, but has "twist." Nonetheless, the two tests are weighed identically. Anyway, someone really helpful sent me a link based on college requirements. I know it's a little tangetial of your original question, but why not? http://www.compassprep.com/admissions_req_subjects.aspx

iwannabebrown- SATs do matter, but they are rarely a plus on your application if you apply to ultra selective schools like the ivies. High scores will not guarantee your admission, or anywhere close. However, low scores will guarantee rejection, assuming you are not privy to special preference like URM status.

Besides 5/7 is great, considering that most people apply a couple reaches. You probably did not get into the schools that were reaches.

I'm pretty sure 2200 is safely into the 99th percentile, meaning that 1% of all students who take the test will score 2200-2400...

About 5% of students in the nation will score above 2000 -- it just so happens that you'll find a lot of those students here.

Don't worry about it, even if they don't look like it here, anyone who scored above 2300 is too smart, anyone above 2200 is insanely smart, anyone above 2100 is exremely smart, and anyone above 2000 is very smart.

Just think of it that way :-P...

ashernm, u misread my post. I only was accepted to 2 out of 7, so I didnt get in to more than just my reaches.

And yeah, a REALLY low score will keep you out, but on CC, many kids would say 14(old sat) is low, but that will not keep you out of any school. 1500+ is a good cushion to have, but many people get in with 14

so iwannabebrown, where did you get in and where were u rejected? if you don't mind me asking...

rejected: Pton Yale
waitlisted: Brown Hopkins UPenn
accepted: WashU Emory

actually... 2090 is 99% they said it matched the psat curve... or was it 2110?

2090 or 2110 is 99%? NO WAY!

if it is maybe i didn't do so bad (2070)...lol

I thought 99% would be 2180-2220

Pepgirly14, that was a huge generalization. I only studied about an hour for the PSAT and got a 232. I also didn't really study for the ACT, except a bit on the math section, and I got a 34. I'm a good student, but I'm not straight As in all difficult courses. And I'm not really interested in any tier 1 colleges. All my dream colleges are tier 2 colleges, like Wheaton or St. Olaf.

Just remember that the SAT is not purely a measure of intelligence--if it were, preparation wouldn't help. It is a measure of test-taking skills, familiarity with the format and the types of questions asked. Some people are better at test-taking than others, and this doesn't always correlate with intellect entirely. Intelligence is a nuanced, complex thing; the SAT asks you to agressively eliminate choices, fill in a bubble (all in 30 seconds or a minute), then repeat a few hundred times. The SAT is a skill in itself.
