Enrolled in maximum possible units + 4 units waitlisted...what happens if I get into the class?

This semester I have enrolled in 20 units and am on the waitlist for CS 61A (4 units). I am permitted to take 20.5 units in the fall semester. Suppose the CS department attempts to move me from the waitlist into the class. Clearly this will not be possible since that would put me over 20.5 units. What will happen? Will I get an email from them, giving me a chance to drop one of my other courses, or will my class seat be given to the next person immediately?

In the latter case, the obvious solution would be to drop one of my courses ahead of time to make space. But I do not want to do this as I am not sure I will get 61A. I should add that CS 61A is currently my highest priority course and I would happily drop any other course if I was certain to get 61A in its stead.

What should I do?

Most likely you won’t get any e-mail and you can take 24.5 units if you wish to. I had semesters that I went over 20.5 units this way and I didn’t get any notice.
Don’t expect receiving an e-mail saying ‘drop one other course, and you’ll be allowed in CS61A’. You getting off the waitlist for CS61A is independent from your maximum unit cap and whatever else scheduling issue.
