Enrolling in Two Colleges

Sorry for my second question. I plan on staying in LSA and majoring in Economics or going into Ross, however I am also interested in minoring in mechanical engineering. How do I get into the engineering school? Do I have to apply to both or am I automatically elidgible?

Adam

I’m 99% sure that you can minor in any college without having to apply there if you’ve already been admitted to another college at U of M. So yeah, you’re automatically eligible.

I believe you need to transfer to Engineering, and then get a concentration in Economics. Talk to your advisor.

Yosup, that is true from Engineering, not necessarily the other way around. And as well from Engineering does not include Ross, or probably the smaller programs. Really just LSA and Art I think.

Oh wow, sorry about that. I’m glad I added the “99% sure” part.

That’s really weird that you have to be in the College of Engineering to major in something in LSA and only minor in something in Engineering. I’m glad Engineers have it easy :)

Qwerty,

I am a newly admitted student and don’t know who I should I ask. Do you have a phone number for an advisor I could speak with?

This isn’t going to be anything you can deal with until you start school. If you’re looking to transfer to engineering RIGHT NOW so you can start off in Engineering, call the admissions office and ask them what to do. Other than that I don’t think you can minor in anything within CoE (College of Engineering), while being enrolled in LSA. If you don’t want to transfer to Engineering, then just wait until your orientation and talk to your advisor when you get there (you’ll find out who that is and how to contact them at your orientation).

I’m just curious now lol. So if he transfers to Engineering, he’ll be able to major in something in LSA and minor in something in Engineering? For example, can I as an Engineering student major in Asian Studies?

^Hmmm… I don’t think you can do that but I’m not sure. Either way, that’s a bad idea because you would have to still take the whole Engineering core, where as [I was told] LSA only really requires a single English class, then you take whatever you want or whatever your concentration demands, where as Engineering has a 55 credit core.
