Enrolling in Upper Div CS courses

Current L&S undeclared student here. I'm finishing all my prerequisites for the CS major this semester so l'll be declaring my major sometime in the next few months. But according to the CS major page I won't be considered officially declared until next semester, which means I won't have the enrollment priority afforded to CS/EECS majors and minors when enrolling in upper div CS courses for fall 2013.

So I was wondering whether it would still possible to get into the more popular CS upper divs like CS 188, which according to the CS draft schedule is going to be taught by Klein, an especially popular instructor. If it is possible, I'll sign up for the class and accept being put on the waitlist but if there's no chance whatsoever I'd rather use my Telebears Phase I for an upper div that I actually have a decent shot of getting into. Any thoughts from current L&S CS majors who've had to go through the same experience? Thanks in advance!

Last fall’s schedule may give you an idea of which courses remained full or close to it even after all of the adds and drops.

I’m not an L&S CS major (I’m EECS), but many people had trouble getting into CS170 this semester, and quite a few were dropped from the waitlist a few weeks in (a couple of weeks before the add/drop deadline) because they simply couldn’t accommodate more people. There was a lot of discussion on Piazza about the waitlist situation. Combined with the fact that the registration priority puts undeclared people dead last, unless your Telebears appointment is fairly early, you will have a hard time getting into insanely popular CS classes. Of course, it’s not impossible to get in, but definitely have backup classes.

(Fun fact: unless they change rooms, it looks like 188 is going to be in 245 Li Ka Shing next semester, which is where 170 is this semester.)

Thanks energize! I’m guessing the CS 170 enrollment issues were at least somewhat due to its being taught by Papadimitriou this semester, right?

I’ve been blessed with pretty early Telebears times the past few semesters, so hopefully I’ll stand a decent chance of getting into the upper divs I want. Still just a little bit frustrating having to decide whether to use up my Phase I on courses that I might not even end up getting into, but we’ll see how it goes. And you’re totally right; backup classes are a must.

Yes, the enrollment problems were probably because PapaD is teaching it. (He has lectured for less than half of the lectures so far, though; Raghavendra is a co-instructor and lectured for the rest of them.)

And if you’re undeclared, I think you’ll probably need an appointment in the first week or so, since they start putting people on the waitlist after about 50 people register.

I believe if you’re undeclared you get put onto the waitlist regardless until phase 2 ends. That’s what happened to me for 188 and what the counselors told me. It’s painful waiting that long when you use your phase 1 to waitlist a class. The enrollment details of each course will tell you who has priority in them. I’m not 100% sure but I think even declared majors will get wait listed sometimes because it seems only a certain amount of people are let into the course initially.
