I've already sent in a refundable enrollment deposit to Michigan State (they said I had to do it within 4 weeks months ago). However, I've been accepted to Michigan and plan to go there. I figure that I should not deposit until I have fin aid information (hopefully I can negotiate for more money more effectively if I haven't deposited?). And as I know it, they can withdraw admission if they find out that I have deposited at more than one school. Is this all correct/ sound reasoning? Thanks.

I don’t think withholding your deposit will have any affect whatsoever on UM giving you more money. They don’t really have to entice good students to enroll - pretty sure there will be someone eager to take your spot (yes, even full pay) if you opt to go elsewhere, and they know it.

So should I withdraw my admission at Michigan State?

Michmom knows what she is talking about. I believe both schools meet 90% of financial need but U of M is a bit more money. So I guess you can get your enrollment money refunded if you are positive on going to umich. Don’t think Michigan cares a bit that you have an enrollment deposit sent elsewhere. How the heck would they find out?
Do they have access to the checks you write? Didn’t think so.
Chances of negotiating any extra money from Michigan are practically zero so don’t get your hopes up.

Nick, students DO NOT have to deposit until may 1, by law, so mich state shouldn’t have asked or made you feel like you had to deposit. Also, do not double deposit, that too is a violation. However, you can just sit tight as you are until the financial packages come out and you’re sure you can afford umich. 90 percent of “need” is based on your CSS at umich, not just on fafsa efc calculations – many people think they have need, but don’t actually have much need due to home equity, assets, etc. So at this point, just wait it out and keep you options open. Once you’re satisfied, release your mich state deposit and deposit at umich. Congrats and best wishes!

Ps to be clear, you do NOT have to deposit at umich until the deadline. They can’t take away your acceptance because you didn’t deposit or anything.

There is no advantage to making the deposit now. Come April it will help to have made the deposit because they will not let you sign up for orientation until the deposit is made. You also cannot sign up for housing but I think the housing deadline is in early May.
