Can someone explain to me the process of enrollment fees please

I just got my first college acceptance today! :) and it doesnt have a due date but it says the fee is refundable up till May 1. Im assuming every college has a enrollment fee refundable or not, so do i have to pay each of these or should i wait till i get all of my responses back.

Im asking because i applied to about 10 colleges i dont wanna put up over 2000 dollars refundable or not. Thank you!

Each school is different as far as whether or not the fee is refundable, many are not.

Also each school is different as far as how they deal with priority for housing, some are rolling and so it is beneficial to put your deposit to get preferred housing incase you end up attending, others have a deadline and anyone who deposits before the deadline is treated the same. I even know of a school where you can sign up for housing before being accepted and without a deposit. So you need to go to the housing website (usually under Campus life) for each school and see how they deal with it.

You say that the fee is refundable until May 1, is it also not DUE until May 1? If so, there’s no need to send it. Most schools notify by about April 1 and require notification that you are attending by May 1, so unless housing is an issue there’s no need to deposit early.

@entomom Would you recommend sending in deposits for large state universities like Rutgers then purely for securing preferable dorms and housing? Even if it’s a safety school?

I applied to UTexas and IndianaU-Bloomington, and I did end up paying the housing deposit. At both schools, the housing and enrollment deposits are separate, and both are partially refundable (it’s $75/$100 nonrefundable). I did it because honors housing at both campuses is in high demand, and both my parents and I decided that we would rather forfeit the money if not necessary so that we would get the housing I wanted (honors) instead of risking being left out (or in UT’s case, being stuck in supplemental housing).

The housing policy of the schools (eg. whether rolling or deadline).

Amount of deposit/ability to pay the deposit.

Whether or not the deposit is refundable.

Interest in school.

No one answer, it varies depending on the school and the candidate.
