I have two questions. First, my son had accepted his enrollment and paid the $300 deposit the second week of December. I have not heard anything from PITT since then. When will we receive information about housing/meal plans? Also, for anyone who has lived in a "living learning community", are these mostly for freshmen or do students remain living in them as long as they want? I am asking because the Business living /learning community resides in Sutherland and I know that Sutherland is mostly dedicated to freshmen students. Just a bit confused.

Some time in the spring, you will get a housing packet. In the past, Pitt has not given priority to early depositors, so I am assuming that is still true. Your son will put in his preferences and write any letters he needs to be considered for the learning community ( or whatever the requirement is).

My daughter, a senior, lived in a living learning community freshman year. It was all freshmen. At that time, students could not live in the community the next year. However, things change, so I do not know whether that has changed.

They actually changed that this year! The earlier you send in your deposit, the more likely you are to get your top choice.

Hmmm…I am not liking this change! They use to require the enrollment deposit before they will send the housing stuff out and the enrollment deposit is non-refundable – have they changed this?

At the earliest, we won’t be sending in an enrollment deposit to any school until April.

So if they changed the rules this year and you send your deposit early, will you be hearing from them regarding housing earlier, or is it all still sent out in spring, but you will get priority?

Thanks Awesome.

I think they’ll still send out all the housing stuff at once (in the spring) but will prioritize by who sent in the deposits first, instead of randomly prioritizing. I’m not sure though, so it may be best to contact OAFA or PC about this, since it’s different from past years.

Just got a reply back from PC:

<<Thank you for contacting Panther Central! As long as your son meets his deposit deadline, he will be a guaranteed student. Those that meet this guarantee will be put into a lottery pool and place their preferences. In short, this means your son will want to pay by the deadline, but will not gain advantage by paying it earlier rather than later.

If you have any other questions feel free to contact Panther Central!

Doesn’t look like there will be a change unless they haven’t forwarded the info down to PC.

So, I submitted my enrollment fee in September. Do I have a better chance of getting my top choice dorm?

No, not according to Panther Central as of this morning. Everyone will be placed in a lottery for dorm assignment.

Good to know. I could have sworn that they had changed the process for this year…but maybe they realized that was a bad mistake…huh.

Or the “new” info has not trickle down to the PC staff??? Anyways, what is the worst dorm – Towers??? Older DS spent a year in Towers and assorted summers there – sure it was small but heck, he survived!

Good point. I could see girls not wanting to live in Holland (Quad, cramped room, and all-girls). Beyond that, I can’t really see any dorm being bad on campus.

Anyone know the deposit deadline? I can’t find it anywhere.

Enrollment deadline should be May 1 and after they get it, housing will send you the forms with the housing deposit deadline. Housing deposit deadline was determined by when you sent the enrollment deposit.

Of course, they may have changed this process since it has been 5 years since we sent the deposits in for DS.

That works for us! Thanks, MT!

Prospective freshmen, admitted for fall term, are guaranteed on campus housing, if the enrollment fee and housing deposit are paid by May 1.

See Housing Guarantee on page 5.

Just to add on to this thread here, anybody know where most of the freshman’s live ? doesn’t matter if the dorms are nice, they are close to classes etc.

By the numbers, 1/3 of the girls will be in Holland in the Hall and a good number of freshman will be in the Towers. Besides those two, there is Sutherland for Athletes and UHC students and Forbes Hall for Engineering students. I can’t remember if freshman live in Lothrop or not. That’s it. Pitt is such a small campus that any dorm is within walking distance of all the classroom buildings/etc.
