My daughter received her ED acceptance more than a month ago but we haven't heard anything since. When should we expect to receive information about housing, orientation...?

I don’t think housing contracts/info get mailed out until May

All freshman housing is assigned. (No choice given, though IIRC ED students might be able to state a preference with no guarantee it’ll be honored.) Roommate questionnaires are pretty minimal. Your only real choice is which of the Group 1 meal plans your daughter will take.

Orientation info comes with the housing contract, IIRC.

What about registering for classes and academic advising? My daughter has a ton of college credits and we need to find out what will transfer, be used for placement, etc.

BTW, WOWM: you’ve been a fantastic resource during this whole process. Thank you for your insight.

What will and won’t transfer will depend upon the department and her major. Every dept has its own policy about accepting non-UR credits. And some depts. (cough-biology-cough) have different policies regarding majors and non-majors.

AP credit policy is here: [Advanced Placement Credit : Center for Academic Support](Advanced Placement : Advising Handbook : College Center for Advising Services : University of Rochester)

CC transfer credit requires OFFICIAL (sealed) transcripts be sent to the registrar’s office. Transcripts will then be evaluated and credit/no credit will be determined. Once allowable transfer credits have been determined, your D will need to contact the individual dept(s) and arrange to meet with them during freshman orientation in August to determine placement. You will not be able to do this any earlier than orientation, unfortunately, although it may certainly be possible to open some correspondence with various depts about placement over the summer. Meeting with the departments in August is important because her general academic advisor may not have the authority to exempt her from pre-reqs.

Since UR doesn’t have gen ed requirements, your D will probably have a bunch of “unassigned” credits (credits that don’t apply towards fulfilling her major, minor or cluster requirements). Lots of kids who are high achieving with college credits coming into UR do.

AP credit generally cannot be used to fulfill cluster requirements and generally can only be used to replace 1 or 2 major/minor course requirements for freshman. (Usually intro level classes) Not sure how UR will treat CC credit, but it’s likely to be the same w/r/t to major/minor requirements. UR really wants all or nearly all of major/minor classes to be taken at UR.

My guess is that your D will also have to still fulfill the freshman writing requirement. (UR requires even upperclass transfer students to take it.) But it might be worth it for your D to contact the coordinator of the writing center to ask. ([College Writing Program : University of Rochester](http://writing.rochester.edu/))

Here’s the link for transfer students [Information for Transfer Students : College Writing Program : University of Rochester](http://writing.rochester.edu/requirements/enteringtransfers.html)

There’s a petition there to be exempted from the WRT 105 requirement.

Course registration materials will arrive in July. At that time your D will be able to register for freshman level classes on line. Upper level classes which have pre-requisites will NOT be available to her during this registration period. (Just how the on-line registration system works.) She can register for a preliminary course schedule and then get it changed during freshman orientation once she knows what her placements will be.

Getting a schedule change is not a big deal and unless she gunning to get in certain very popular upper level classes she shouldn’t have a problem getting the classes she wants. The key is for her to be flexible about the courses and the times.

NOTE: don’t send her transcripts now because until she officially enrolls, the registrar won’t have a file on her. Better wait until later in the spring–May or June maybe.

Ah! Found it! The transfer credit policy:

[Transfer Credit : Center for Academic Support](<a href=“Transfer and Pre-Matriculation Credit : Advising Handbook : College Center for Advising Services : University of Rochester”>Transfer and Pre-Matriculation Credit : Advising Handbook : College Center for Advising Services : University of Rochester)

My d came in with 3 credits from Cornell. She was granted the credit, but it counted only towards the total credit amount necessary for graduation. It did not count towards a cluster or her minor, even though it was similar to a course in her minor.

I don’t know if UR treats CC credit the same way, but I would assume so. I thinkt he Transfer Credit link that WOWM posted is for students who take classes at another college/university once they’re already UR students. (A friend of my d’s for example, took Intro Organic Chemistry at another school during the summer between freshman & sophomore years and got credit and placement for it.)
