Some of my friends going to cal this year have said they could 'enter as sophomores' due to their AP credits. When I took the campus tour our guide also said since she had a certain amount she was able to apply for classes before other freshmen.

How exactly does this work (how many credits needed, which APs, etc.)? Any insight would be appreciated.

Thanks guys.

30 units or more total and you are in sophomore status. The answer for which APs and how many credits vary by the college to which you are enrolling - here is the sites for College of L&S which is the most populous college at Cal:
[Planning Your Years@Cal-Advanced Placement & High School Enrichment](http://ls-advise.berkeley.edu/pyyac/freshman/ap.html) is the general discussion of both CC and AP credits and this is the specific list of L&S AP units granted, minimum AP test scores and any requirements that can be waived based on these tests - [Advanced Placement Examinations](http://ls-advise.berkeley.edu/faq/ap.html)

It takes Cal a while to count those units, thus almost all incoming Freshman start as Freshman status for the Fall semester, but by Spring those AP and CC units should be recorded to boost your class rank and priority for registration, etc.

A lot of people enter as sophomores so it’s not something to really brag about. It lets you pick classes earlier than some people.

Our s is entering as a junior at UMCP but he’ll be spending the full 4 years as an undergrad.

if I take the ap tests after admission (essentially taking AP tests my senior year) will those units still count?

AP tests taken during your Sr. year will count as much as those taken earlier.

Yes, they will. As long as the test is taken before you enroll, you are fine. That means all the AP tests from Spring of your senior year will be considered.

They will be processed by Cal during the summer and very very slowly show up in your records. For example, they indicated receipt of senior year AP test scores and used those to waive certain UCB required classes, but the unit credits are not yet recorded. It will happen but not instantly or crisply.

Trust but verify.
