Entering Freshman--What to bring?

I don't think most college kids do much ironing.

you can have an iron in your room, just put it out of plain sight (closet, etc.)

microwaves take up a lot of room, i would just use the one on your hall or dorm lobby. plus, you risk getting a hard-ass RA who will make you get rid of it.

Thank you lily for letting us know there are microwaves in the dorms.
RE: laundry facilities--in each dorm? If so, are there ironing boards AND irons in that laundry room-so you don't need to buy an iron???

no, there aren't (at least in my experience) irons or ironing boards in laundry rooms. but each dorm does have its own laundry facility.

Generally, when they say stuff is prohibited, in terms of electronics, etc. they mean operation in your room. In my dorm, for example, we have suites and 2 bathrooms per. We're not allowed to have hot water heaters/coffeemakers/etc in our rooms (though everyone has them) but we can use them on the counters (cos its tiled and not carpet). if you have appliances (toaster, george forman grill, etc) you can't use them in your room, but for use we had floor kitchens where you could use them.

However, as mentioned above, it all depends on your CA's (NU doesnt like calling them RA's because northwestern has communities, not residences =P)

so if you don't live in a suite are you not allowed to have one of those instant water heaters from like tefal

You can really have anything prohibited as long as it's out of plain sight; it can even be in plain sight if your CA doesn't care. I've had a microwave for two years now, one year it was covered by a towel and one year it was just sitting on my fridge.

are hampers really necessary?

Haha, yes! How would you do laundry without one? form a pile in the closet? That's one thing I really couldn't do without.

the PC or Apple question. It depends on the major, for engineers I'd say PC. Besides engineers are expected to know a little about computers. Some software engineers use are also generally only available for PC. For all else get an apple. It's harder to break, and you don't need a virus scanner.
As for software. NU offers only Norton Antivirus (SAV), EndNote, and old versions of Eudora for free. There are discounts on Office, and Maple and such. If you do get a PC don't use the preinstalled antivirus or even buy one. Part of that $49000 goes to SAV licenses. It's free forever, and very hassle free.
As for a printer. Bring a small one if you must. Generally most people use them very infrequently. If it's large you will end up throwing it away at the end of the year. You will see lots of printers thrown out. If you know how the printing works you can get free printing. I have access to a couple labs where the printer isn't locked, so I quit bringing my printer. My roommate works in a bio lab with several printers, so he doesn't bring a printer either.
I used my duffle bag from hockey as a hamper.Just wash it regularly too. Lots of people end up throwing their hampers away at the end of the year.
The microwave is officially not allowed. But if they don't see it they don't know. Most CAs will not care. It is housing that sometimes cares. Irons are allowed to be brought, but not ironing boards, and I have never seen an actual ironing board in a laundry room. There are tables in the laundry rooms that can be used for ironing.
Also nobody enforces the fridge size limit. As long as you're not hauling in a double door full size they won't care. We had three in our room all stacked on top of each other, and housing the admin didn't care.
I've never been in a cold dorm room yet. The radiators are generally very good. But during the summer if the dorm doesn't have AC it will get quite hot. So bring a fan.
Don't bother bringing in a land phone if you have plenty of minutes on your cell phone.
The biggest problem is cell phones. If you live in the north cell phone reception for everybody except for Sprint/Nextel and Verizon is spotty at best inside buildings. Reception is fine down south for all carriers.

Do you guys know if there's some sort of a discounted mobile phone program for NU students?

Okay so I know we're not TECHNICALLY allowed to have Wi-Fi in the dorms, but I simply must have my DS and Mario Kart or Metroid Prime. I was wondering, if I get one of those little Airport Express base stations and turn the range down real low...who's gonna know. Right? Right...?

lol... you guys are way too paranoid. Most CAs don't care about most of these "forbidden objects" rules. Slightly oversized refrigerators, microwaves, water heaters, etc, don't bother them that much, they know you have them, they just kind of turn a blind eye. Just don't go around parading whatever you have - don't be like "Oh you need that heated? Use the microwave in my room," etc. And dorms have built in Wi-Fi, so you shouldn't have to worry.

That's not true, RisingSun. Some rooms in Willard got wireless being close enough to the sorority quads, but many did not, and I know other dorms were similar. Unless they made the dorms all wireless over the summer.

I must say that I am surprised and completely disappointed that a school like NU would not have WI FI in all of its dorms. What's up with that?? For all the money being paid? Really, I'm shocked.

I know, Cerebral Assassin, I should have known this before. My bad.

I think all dorms have wifi in study and rec lounges, but not in the rooms. the idea is that if you have a plug, you should be ok. whatever -_-. theres a map of all the wireless aps on the nuit page

three times a charm i guess...

hhahahaha

Actually, you're right, I do remember that people didn't get wireless in their rooms but there was wireless elsewhere in the building. My bad :-P.
