Nope- used to be a “pen and paper” part of O-Week. Inspired dread, although it really wasn’t that dreadful. Glad that it’s done online and graded before you arrive! ;)

I know at least 2 years ago it was done online because my son wrote his essays at home long before O-Week. He would really have hated to have to write those essays during O-Week – it would have sucked all the fun out of it .

I did the comp test in one day…you have a couple “sources”, which you have to quote in your paper…i just highlighted the important info and banged out the paper, it’s only temporary.

As for the book, it’s somethin by a lady originally from Africa who came to America…forgot what it’s about. You should probably attempt to read it, cause there is an informal discussion of the book during O-Week, but don’t feel bad if you don’t read it cause some people don’t read it period.

It is part of your total O week experience and is carefully chosen by the Common Reading Selection Committee, composed of faculty, staff and students.

This year’s choice is called The House At Sugar Beach: In search of a lost African childhood. By Helene Cooper.

Don’t buy the book, though! It will be sent to you by Rice. If you search for an earlier thread called “Common Reading”, you can find out more about it.
