Hi there! I recently was accepted to the Letters and Sciences college and will be attending Berkeley this fall. I was wondering if someone can answer some questions for me:
- I plan on double majoring in Physics and Comp Sci. Is this doable and what is the difficulty?
- What would a schedule of classes look like for my freshman and sophomore years?
- Is the EECS program much different then the Comp Sci program and in what ways?
- I plan on going into AI development or graduate physics work after my undergrad, so would my majors be the best choice?
Thanks!
- Yes, although most people tend to lean towards one or another since with CS you can easily graduate a semester early and go out and make some serious bucks while with physics, you are more or less going straight to grad school afterwards and study for a long time. They are very different paths but there are some overlapping classes in your freshman and sophomore years so you can then decide if you still want to do both or choose one.
- If you got a 5 on BC Calc, you would be taking Math 53-54-55, Physics 7A-7B-7C, CS 61A-61B-61C, and other L&S requirements that fits your schedule nicely and interesting for you. You can always take any classes you want in general so don’t be afraid to sign up for whatever classes you find interesting
- EECS is under College of Engineering while Computer Science is under L&S so there are some different college requirements. If you do a CS-focused path on EECS, it is virtually the same as CS. If any employer or other schools make any big deal out of that difference which isn’t even a difference, don’t even bother to argue because any thread that tries to bring up the difference is stupid.
- Yes, take some more classes to develop and specify your interest which is what college is about.
Welcome. Hope you enjoy your time here.
