Entering Summer B Admits are eligible for 2018 Bright Future (FAS)

SUMMER 2018 BRIGHT FUTURES UPDATE: UF SFA received new guidance from the State of Florida’s Office for Student Financial Assistance that entering Summer B admits will be eligible to receive the Florida Academic Scholar level of Bright Futures.

Note this is for the FAS level of BF, the FMS (Florida Medallion Scholar) level will not be eligible this summer. You do have to take a minimum of 6 credits…

If you use twitter, I recommend following @UFSFA for updates and reminders.

Woo-hoo! I have twins starting college Summer B, so this is HUGE for me!

Sounds good, it’s sort of always the way I’d interpreted what I read about Scott’s signing. Did something change in past few days or just clarified to the Universities?

Seems like FSU knew of this back at end of Jan, no wonder I was confusing an FSU mom saying NO, had spoken to UF, not for our seniors… :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

Great news. Thanks for sharing.

@Gator88NE, after reading your post, my wife has already been in touch with UF and set up our son to use Bright Futures for the summer. We hadn’t really paid attention to Bright Futures since they are an offset for the Benacquisto Scholarship, but, since the Benacquisto doesn’t start til fall, we’ll get a little from Bright Futures after all. Thanks!

@oldandwise you mentioned your wife has been in touch with UF and set up your son to use Bright Futures. Who is it there that we call? This call is necessary? I thought if we put UF on the application it is automatic?

@22mom I think it is automatic (UF will try to charge the state/BF), but for those with the Benacquisto it may be a bit more complicated. Calling SFA office never hurts…

Summer award not showing in One.UF as “offered” yet; wonder when to expect to see it.

@OldLady21 For a Summer B admit? I wouldn’t be surprise if it never shows up, but that shouldn’t impact having UF bill the state for the funds. It can’t hurt to pester UF about it, but I bet you’ll see it first pop up in your account activity (Summer B tuition being charged, and then BF being billed/paid) before it updates on the financial update form as being “offered”.

Now that I think about it, you likely are looking at the 2018-2019 Financial aid summary? If so, it doesn’t even include Summer 2018, you’ll notice it’s showing Summer 2019 (as well as Fall 2018 and Spring 2019). Looking at my son’s info, it also doesn’t show any BF funds for summer 2019. However, I notice that his 2017-2018 financial aid form did update this Spring with BF funds for summer 2018 (this summer). I wouldn’t worry about no funds showing yet in summer 2019, or that the form doesn’t show summer 2018, as this was the first year FA could even be offered for a Summer B admit.
