@dcolosi I just wanted to say that I have a similar D and completely understand your concerns. I’m sorry that happened to your daughter and added an extra layer of unneeded stress to all of your lives.
Thanks for the tip on Fairtest.org, didn’t know about that site, however at a quick glance most of the schools won’t have her major. We do have one school in Indiana that is on the list but that would be her last resort option. We’ve visited that school twice, and we know several people who have gone to it and haven’t liked it and transferred out.
Honestly, if she doesn’t get into her first choice, we will take a serious look at the OOS school because we know she get’s in and would get some automatic scholarship money. We won’t qualify for any aid, so we are full pay. The OOS school would be about $30k a year which is doable for us. Instate would be better but if we can keep it under $35k then we should be okay. My older D stayed instate and she earned some scholarships so we haven’t had to spend as much on her as we anticipated to that helps to offset if we have to go over our plan for younger D.
For my two cents, no matter where your D ends up she should succeed as she is a hard worker. I have one that does horrible on tests, but works very hard and is doing well in college. Its sucks that this happened. I also know that at camp its very hard to do any “outside” work. Last year while being a CIT my S19 was taking an online summer class and we had to make specific times for him to get on a computer. It was not easy.
Has your D worked with anyone specializing in test anxiety? I’m just wondering if she’ll feel the same pressure in college where so much of the grade is based on just a few exams.
We haven’t worked with anyone on test anxiety. Her intended major is Interior Design and from what we’ve seen on the program of studies and visits so much of the work is around the projects which she does very well with. She is selecting the correct major for her make up and how she works best and enjoys. She does well on her school test and her high school is run more like a college anyway. She actually had two classes this year that used college text books that I had to buy. It really is just these 1 time standardized test that she seems to struggle the most with.
I just looked at College Board and her SAT account is now showing the status of Makeup on her admission ticket so don’t know what that means. I haven’t heard from them yet so don’t know if that is just their way of crediting us for admission to the August test. I don’t see a date. I guess I’ll find out soon what they plan to do with the impacted kids.
Also looks like there is a 6/15 make up test in the area. Not ideal as its a 45 minute drive away. Not sure if they will see if they can put the kids in that exam or not.
Is there a hotel you could stay at the night before that is closer?
@dcolosi, my sister did the ID program at Western Kentucky and loved it.
A 45 minute drive may be a hassle but presumably less so than having to re-engage a tutor at a later stage. Hope it works out. Good luck.
@skieurope says
It might. At one CA high school 160+ AP tests were invalidated after principal realized the desks were a few inches shy of the required 5 ft spacing. All those kids sat for a re-take a couple weeks later.
According to the college board website there is a listed make up test on June 15th in my state. There is also a listed make up for a location in Pennsylvania. Those are the only two states I am seeing listed make up exams. In my state there is only one location so I am assuming if we are offered this date we only have the option of this location.
I would go for the make-up exam if it works with your schedule (or without too much jiggling of things) For my DD, the date that worked was at a location about an hour away. (we waited too long to register). We got a hotel the night before and then drove back after the exam. An added expense but worth it for us. Good luck!
I understand that she was upset, but this really isn’t something to spend most of the night crying about it. You need to help her develop a thicker skin. Life has setbacks. I’m sure this wasn’t the first time a group of kids had their scores thrown out. You have to learn to deal with the unexpected without falling apart. My daughter took her SAT during a tornado warning. The proctor asked the group if they wanted to stop or continue - as a group they said they would continue and see what happened. They finished and the tornado skirted just to the north.
“In my state there is only one location so I am assuming if we are offered this date we only have the option of this location”
If it works for you, I would actively ask after it rather than wait to be offered.
I only read the first page in this thread, but that was enough to make me appreciate standardized test optional admissions schools.
I think what happened is a disgrace. College board needs to get on top of this. Apparently happens more time than we hear about. Some of the proctors, especially in low income area are terrible and the tests are taken under non standard circumstances. To invalidate the scores really puts burden on the kids. College should do 2 make up days for kids so poorly treated and that same proctor have to work them under supervision.
It takes a great deal of time and money to write and validate a test. Since the tests are offered about 9 times a year anyway, there are alternatives. I don’t think having an improper proctor return solves anything. The test center may lose its status if it suggested the proctor, as high schools sometimes do
Sorry in advance. However, the principal who had 160 tests invalidated because of the desks being a few inches shy of the five foot rule is a d bag.
@blossom sometimes you have offered suggestions about alternate intended majors that can get to the same end goal. Do you have any suggestions for a student who wants to be an interior designer…but only has one instate option offering that major? Are there other majors that would get this student to the same career goal?
@dcolosi I’m asking this because very often a student can major in another thing, and take courses that will get them to their end game!
Sadly, people have been saying the CB needs to be on top of a lot of things, like cheating in Asia, and have been saying that as long as I’ve been here, and most likely even longer than that. I’ve seen no change other than more reasons to get more money from students/parents.
@privatebanker I’m sure 160+ students (who had to retake APs during finals week with projects due, etc.) agree with you. But the principal saw the spacing mistake, felt a duty to report it, and tried to negotiate letting the scores stand. But CB stood firm.
