Entomology?

If you apply to a college where you have a good enough GPA and SAT would majoring in entomology help your chances? Keep in mind I have quite a few extracurriculars related to the subject. I was just wondering how much it would help me since not a lot of kids choose this major.

What if you’re accepted to that major, and can’t change it? What’s your major?

Most colleges do not admit by major.

At Cornell, which has a solid department of Entomology, you would not be evaluated as an applicant to the department of Entomology, but rather to the College of Agriculture and Life Sciences. Admission is selective, but if you have a passion for Entomology and can effectively communicate that passion, you have a shot…assuming you have the GPA and test scores. Successful applicants tend to take AP classes in Calculus, Biology and Chemistry, maintain an unweighed GPA over 3.6 and over 650 on each section of the SAT. I suspect other top programs, like the ones at UC-Davis, UIUC etc…, will have similar expectations, albeit not as selective. Considering the complexity and importance of the field, I do not think admission standards into those programs would be appreciably lower, even if they are not as popular.

Bump

Are you actually interested in entomology? You’ll have a hard time finding a college with that particular major. Nine times out of ten, choosing a unique/rare major doesn’t help in admissions process. Also, what job were you possibly thinking about? It might be more viable to do something a little broader like biology etc.

I am interested and was thinking about going to medical school

UC Riverside and UC Davis have highly ranked Entomology programs along with medical schools.
Not sure what schools you are looking at, but definitely worth a look.
