I'm majoring in mechanical engineering currently working as a design intern at a F500 aerospace company. I have found that I do not like the things that a design engineer does and I am not too fond of doing a lot of CAD. I want to do an engineering role that is less technical, but I am worried that if I do not do a design/analysis/structures entry level role I will not have the skills to advance (the company I am interning for really places a lot of emphasis on technical depth).

I haven’t seen too many interns at the places I’ve worked, but of the ones I’ve seen, they always seemed to be stuck doing menial crap that the full-time engineers didn’t want to do.

If you don’t think that’s what’s happening, maybe you switch to industrial engineering. Of the jobs that have “engineering” in their titles, IE is the least technical. (Sanitation engineer and domestic engineer don’t count.)

darknight, there is no rule that says you have to be a design engineer. It’s an internship. Do the best you can knowing that you want to look in a different direction for a career. You might become a quality engineer, a plant manager. But having the experience you have will not go to waste. But you now know when you search for a full-time job, you will consider how much design and CAD work is necessary. And you also know that perhaps that company isn’t for you.

Ok thanks for the advise.
