Envelope size of recommendations?

I know Stanford specifies that it wants a 9 X 12 envelope for the recommendations, but if the school doesn't specify, would a normal 4.5 X 9.5 envelope work?

I know it’s easier for colleges if the pages are unfolded, but I am sending pre-addressed/pre-stamped envelopes to my mentor on the other side of the country to write an additional LOR and it’s much more convenient to send a smaller envelope. I’m wondering if sending a smaller envelope will affect my admissions chances? (except for Stanford, which seems really picky)

Bump .

I already gave my teachers a “normal” sized envelope (smaller in this case I guess)… Is this an issue?

Does anyone know if Wellesley has any specific preference for envelope sizes?

Also,
Brown University
Smith College
Claremont McKenna
Boston College
Scripps
USC
NYU

Thanks in advance!!

Yes that has gotten on my nerves too. I recently emailed the Columbia Admissions Office, and they said they do not have any requirements on the envelope size. Of course, for Stanford, since they explicitly said 9x12, then we all have to use 9x12. Columbia did not state any specific requirements, and after I emailed them they said they had no specific preferences, so a standard business letter size would be fine, at least that is what I will do until told otherwise.

When my oldest was applying, I went out and bought a box of those larger-sized ones that wouldn’t require the recommendation to be folded. I thought labels looked a little nicer than hand-written addresses too.
