Enviro Engineering Grad School Question

Hi all,

I'm new to this forum and it seems like it's a great resource so I'd figure I'd give it a shot. Here's my background information:

I'm currently a rising junior at a state liberal arts college in New York. I am majoring in Environmental Geochemical Science which is essentially a hybrid major of geology and chemistry that focuses on the environmental aspects of each. My school doesn't offer a typical Environmental Science degree, so EGS is the closest I can get.

I may minor in mechanical engineering and am currently doing full-time grant-based research with ME faculty focusing on computational fluid dynamics of fluid flow through rock fractures. We're working with the Department of Energy on this project so next summer I may be able to work at their national laboratory in West Virginia.

I have strong feelings about wanting to be an environmental engineer and so I would try to pursue a graduate degree in it. I plan to continue my research, present at conferences, and have at least one publication by the time I graduate. I also anticipate my graduating GPA to be in the 3.3-3.5 range.

Am I suited to even apply to an EnvE program?

Two things I forgot to mention:

 1. I’m in the Honors Program
 2. As far as engineering goes my schools only offers electrical and computer but a mechanical department was just started one year ago. Since the program won’t be accredited it wouldn’t be a good move to major in that but I think minoring wouldn’t be a bad idea since it’s only six classes.

Since no one has commented, maybe no one around currently is familiar with that major. Of course your professors should be the first people you ask. Also look at the pages for a few programs and read when they say about prereqs for the program. I think UW Madison has a lot of related programs try a look at their pages. To me, it sounds like you are on a really good path and doing that research will help you a lot. It seems taking those ME classes will help you and make your more capable for your plan for next summer so it sounds like a good idea. see if thegradcafe has any forum for your major or related.
