Environmental Engineering: Michigan vs. Michigan Tech

Hi Everyone,

I have been admitted to several masters programs but I think it's going to come down to Michigan or Michigan Tech.

The main difference, as always, is funding.

Michigan hasn't offered me any funding. Michigan Tech has guaranteed the first year of funding and I suspect that once I'm there I should be able to get on a research project.

To be honest, the only thing that makes me a little hesitant about MTU is that it's in Houghton MI. Other than what I assume will be cold and isolation I think it's a good fit.

I applied for a GEM fellowship back in November but I never heard back from them.

Thanks!

I’m a prospective freshmen at these two schools and I have visited both. While I can’t argue against Michigan reputation, I can say that Michigan Tech may be a better fit. If you haven’t visited, I suggest you do. If you like outdoor activities and a very comfortable small town atmosphere, Houghton has it all. I really enjoyed it - the combination of a small yet campus town was really unique and comfortable. Plus, the smaller school seemed really involved with the student body. Undergraduates actively talk about their relationships with professors and everyone seems to know each other in such small classes. I just think generally, you will get more attention at MTU.
