Ive narrowed down my major choices to two options so far, geology and Environmental engineering. Im going to get a masters in whichever one i cmdo end up choosing or maybe even a BS in one and possibly an MS in another.
What exactly kind of problems do environmental engineers deal with? I know for geology you need atleast an MS in preferably a PhD to be successful.
As far as Enviro Eng, goes, i know its a more stable field and pays better than geology in most cases.
opinions? geology is more interesting to me but i am also very interested in Environmental sciences.
Geoscientist that work in the Oil and Gas extraction industry (about 1 in 5) earn a lot, otherwise, on average it pays a bit less than environmental engineering.
Both are expected to have faster than average job growth, with environmental being a bit faster.
Really, either option is fine. You’ll need to do more research on both. Look at the curriculum for each major, what’s required for licensure (the professional geology (PG) licensure exam and the FE exam, the first step in earning e P.E. license), and how easy would it be to switch between these two majors at your targeted schools. Also, you likely will have to option of earning a minor in Geology (if you major in environmental engineering), or in environmental sciences (if you major in Geology).
Don’t worry too much about earning a masters/PhD, you have time to figure that out, once you’re in college.
The school that has environmental engineering doesn’t have geology as a minor unfortunately. I’m still exploring engineering as a field, but geology was what I had initially intended and planned on. In fact it’s what my current ed plan is set up for and everything.
I’m currently at community college on my 3rd semester, but both fields have nearly the same lower division reqs for transfer into a university.
I could in fact minor in environmental science though at the university that has the Geology major. As far as careers go, I know I want to start out with state/federal employment to get a few years experience and then possibly if I feel like it try for maybe the private sector.
