I initially applied for environmental engineering out of pure randomness, but since I'm taking an AP Environmental course right now, I'm becoming more and more interested about the environment. I was accepted to UC Merced(Environ. Engineering) and CSULA(Health and Human Services or something). I'm currently waitlisted at Cal Poly Pomona for Graphic Design(though I kinda want to transfer to engineering if possible :X).

Should I go to UC Merced for engineering? I'd actually look forward to it, but the only thing is that it's pretty far away and that I've had problems with my math grades in high school(mostly C's and B's). If I'm not too good at math, is environmental engineering still for me??

Two things I’d check before deciding: 1 - is UCM Engineering ABET accredited - I’d think twice if its not and you want to work as a professional engineer. 2- What other majors are offered that you might find interesting if engineering doesn’t work out.

The class list looks pretty typical - yes that means lots of math. And its not only math classes but your engineering science classes (statics, dynamics, thermo) are all based on math.

Merced is a probably not a bad place - haven’t been there in years. Particularly nice if you enjoy the mountains. And its not that far away from LA. (My S goes to school 9 hours away from home and didn’t mind.)

No matter what engineering you do, you’ll probably have to take math at least through differential equations, so yes there is a lot of math. Also for environmental there is a lot of chemistry.

Also, like osdad said, you’ll want to make sure it’s ABET accredited because you’ll need to get PE licensure if you want to get anywhere worth going in the field.
