I am looking for schools (preferably near or in a large city) that have a strong Environmental Science program. I would be transferring either in Spring 2011 or Fall 2011 as a sophomore/junior (I believe I have missed most deadlines for Fall of 2010).

Hopkins has a cool new major: Global Environmental Change and Sustainability if you are interested in something like that. Just throwin’ it out there ;)

We were impressed by Bowdoin’s environmental sciences program compared to most of the other top LACs that we looked at. Good breadth and depth-arctic studies center and a marine research center (which we actually visited-it’s about a 10 minute drive from campus, right on the coast).

And if you are into outdooring (hiking, rafting, camping, kayaking, rock-climbing, etc…) as an EC, it seems like more than half the school participates.

Carleton College is about 50 minutes outside Minneapolis-St. Paul and offers an Environmental Sciences major long supported by a “practice-what-you-preach” commitment to environmentalism.

The Northfield campus has the nation’s first college based industrial sized wind turbine with a second in the planning stages. The school’s green efforts have earned it the highest rating offered by The College Sustainability Report Card: [The College Sustainability Report Card](http://www.greenreportcard.org/).

Supporting the program of study, the adjacent 900 acre arboretum provides great field study opportunities. In the classroom, the sciences at Carleton are among the best found anywhere. Specifically, the incredible Geology department turns out more PhD’s in the discipline than any LAC or university in the nation.
