Environmental Studies at UA + Music

Hi,

I’m a national merit finalist, and I’m seriously considering UA right now. But I was wondering if anyone can tell me about UA’s environmental studies program? That’s what I’m planning on majoring in, but I couldn’t find any information on it.

Also, music is a huge part of my life, but I don’t plan on being a music major. Are nonmusic majors still allowed to take a lot of the music classes? I know at some colleges, most of the classes are exclusive to music majors.

Thanks!

My daughter will be minoring in music. As far as I know, non-majors can still take classes, but priority is given to majors and minors. Everybody else would have to take whatever times were left over, if any.

If you want to play in either the Alabama Wind Ensemble or the Huxford Symphony Orchestra, you also have to be a music major or minor.

Here’s the School of Music [info for non-music majors.](http://music.ua.edu/undergraduates/non-majors/)

Is it still/indeed true that you have to be a music major/minor to play in these ^^ groups at UA?!
Kinda supports my questions in my other post, about starting orchestra for non-majors…
Please help if you can! :)

Actually, no, that doesn’t seem to be the case any more. I could have sworn that info was on the website a yeaer ago, but my D now says that non-music majors can participate in the orchestra/concert band groups. It all depends on how well they audition.

Just confirmed on [this page](Ensembles – The University of Alabama Bands | The University of Alabama) that the Wind Ensemble (as well as Symphonic and Concert Bands) is open to any university student, regardless of major. Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band are audition-based, and Concert Band is open to anyone (auditions are for chair placement only).

Found a [page for the Orchestra](http://music.ua.edu/the-huxford-symphony-orchestra-seeks-string-musicians/). The page confirms it’s open to all students regardless of major as well. The page is about 2011-2012 auditions. The info about next school year won’t be out until much later, at least based on last year’s posting of information.

You know, there does seem to be a transition taking place at Alabama right now with the influx of NMF and high stats STEM majors. I’m sure that there are more kids than ever interested in opportunities for non-music majors to stay active in music. It may be that this is the right time to look into starting something up there. I know my son wants to stay active in music…but will not be a music major or minor.

Welcome!

As long as I’ve known, Bama has allowed non-majors/minors to participate. As mentioned in another thread, one of my son’s friend was a non-major in the orchestra…she didn’t minor in music either. She started in 2007 and graduated last May.

BAMAmom may be confusing the issue with music scholarships…you can’t get a music scholarship as a non-major …I think unless you’re in the MDB and that one wouldn’t be much.

That said, my son’s friend did get paid to sub for an orchestra in B’ham.

I’m not sure if this is true. Those who are in an ensemble or whatever would have access to any req’s classes.

As for environmental studies…

There is the Dept of Civil, Construction, and Environmental Engineering (which would give you an additional 2500 per year on top of the NMF scholarship).
