I guess this late in the game other school suggestions are somewhat pointless, but Evergreen State College would be a great choice. I have a friend that goes there and really loves it. It’s very environment-oriented and absolutely gorgeous. It might be a bit more writing intensive than what you’re looking for. Sorry I can’t really help. Good luck!

environmentmom, thanks for the update on the outcomes of your son’s application process, and congratulations to him on his acceptances thus far.

No particular comments to offer on those programs, except the general point of advocating that more students should look to the public land grant universities, if they are interested in environment studies (especially the applied aspects). A wide range interesting and innovative environmental programs are to be found at those universities, and I think many students fail to give them due consideration.

Thanks for the update on your son, he will have some great choices!

My older D is getting her second bachelors at SUNY ESF, and has applied to grad school there. She got her first bachelors @Colgate in 2008.

I know these aren’t the most prestigious schools around, but Stephen F. Austin State University (Nacogdoches, TX) and the University of North Texas (Denton, TX) both have pretty good environmental science/studies/engineering programs. I’ve actually got a friend that’s headed to SFA next year as an environmental science major and she is very impressed with what she’s heard so far!

Thank you again for all of your input. He will be attending accepted students days at UVM, SUNY ESF and Rutgers in the next 2 weeks- hopefully one will really strike him as the right place, while we wait to hear on the other schools.

Oregon Tech has a remarkable commitment to sustainability, particularly geothermal energy. They’re still taking applications. This is from their website:

“OIT’s emphasis on sustainability is a long-held tradition. Home to the nation’s first undergraduate program in renewable energy engineering, we’re busy becoming the first geothermally powered university. Since the 1960’s, geothermal resources have heated the main campus situated between Klamath Lake and the foothills of the Cascade Mountains. It’s a beautiful and environmentally rich setting for some of the Northwest’s newest educational facilities utilizing green building practices. This fall the Village for Sustainable Living opens its apartment style residences to students, an exciting expansion of OIT’s vital campus life. The Martha Ann Dow Center for Health Professions now includes a second wing of teaching labs and classrooms with leading edge technology.”

OIT was on the original list until we figured out how far away from a major airport (5 hours from Portland) in total way too many hours to get home (or for us to visit- New Jersey).

We are attending the accepted student day at ESF next week, and have also scheduled a tour of Syracuse University the following day. They are having an Open House there the same day as ESF’s AS day, so we’ll miss that. But when we had done our original visit our info session and tour started at 1 in the afternoon and we noticed that many of the other participants had done the SU tour in the morning. We really regretted not doing that. Since we’re doing this visit over school break we figured it was a good opportunity to see both schools during the week and with snow on the ground! My D’s already decided on the school but really wanted to visit more so we are taking the trip to Syracuse again.

I had read someone else’s comment that she and her son found the campus very depressing and empty and he chose Cortland instead. We found all of the students very outgoing and enthusiastic, we had visited on a rainy Friday in November, and the other poster had visited on a sunny October day and found the campus empty. I was thinking that maybe they were all out doing something!

Hope your son falls in love with one of the schools!

“True dat” as my 16-year-old would say.

Bella21- we will be at the accepted students day at SUNY ESF on Monday the 21st as well- great idea to take a Syracuse tour as well- not sure we can stay another day but will definitely explore the idea. Thank you! Perhaps we will meet…
