Episcopal High School, Alexandria, VA

My son's SSAT score are just above average. I looked at the Episcopal High School, Alexandria, VA category. I really like it.

We will have interview with them at the begining of Jan. How is the school ? Do you think he has any chance to get in ?

Thanks.

yan19454, Episcopal is an excellent school. However, SSAT scores are not the only factor they look at when deciding on who they accept. I'm sure you're aware of this......... Good Luck to your son

What are you son's stats?

SSAT Verbal 685
Math 695
Reading 680

It seems the precentile is low.

What are the percentiles?

Verbal: 66%
Math: 55%
Reading 73%
Total: 66%

I think it is above average .

Math is pretty average, but he other two are above average. The average SSAT score for accepted students to Episcopal is 75%, so your son is definitely in that range.

What are his extracurricular activities and grades like?

He is the first violinist in school orchestra and participart math count. We practice karate. He got main role while he was in the elementary school chorale. He is not doing chorale any more in middle school. He has music talent but he is enthusiastic about participart about the school activities. Scorewise in school is above average. He is in level six one level below gifted.

We also look for St Andrew Del. Any chance ?

St. Andrew's may be a bit tougher. Is he considering any other schools?

One of my closest friends goes there currently, and she loves it.

I live in West Palm, FL. I've been to the campus for a tour, and it's beautiful, but I didn't really feel it suited me. It's a good school, and has a major selling point because it is near Washingotn, D.C.

What boarding school do you think he has chance to be in the Mid-Atlantic area ? I like the Hun School of Princeton, Princeton, NJ but I feel it will be hard for him to get . Personally I like the school closed to DC. Thanks.

Check out the hill, blair, peddie and other MAPL schools

Woodberry Forest seems like a great school, too. It's all boys, though.

Prepparent, could you respond to my PM, please?

I think Mercersburg ( one of the MAPL schools) is not that far from Washington DC. I believe your son's stats would put him in the running there. My son goes to Blair, so feel free to ask me questions about that school if you look there.

I met someone who was applying to Mercersburg yesterday. It seems like a great school.

according to the post here, I think Mercersburg, Peddie is hard for my son to get in. As my son is an above average student, we aren't confident about applying in some kind of school that obviously he would not get selected. I have never thought about private school until my friend took me for the tour. I went to Hill , CFS-The School at Church Farm and George in PA. Hill is much nice than George. CFS's average SAT is lower than the school district I am. Why bother ? Some schools( Like Woodberry Forest) do not have mean SAT and College Placement posting in the web. It seem hard to make the judgement about the school.

Thanks.

A 65% SSAT is above average. You should have a projected SAT score on the SSAT report. You can compare his projected SAT to the SAT range of the schools you are considering. More importantly, he is a talented musician who plays the violin. This will appeal to a number of schools. You can review potential schools at www.boardingschoolreview.com , www.schools.com and www.petersons.com . Petersons has both day and boarding.
According to Peterson's, the average SAT at Mercersburg was around 1220. I am guessing that this is around the projected SAT for a 65% SSAT.
You are right to be cautious about which schools would be a good fit. My suggestion is to put together a list of schools that are perhaps 2 reaches, 2 matches and 2 safeties. If you select carefully, you should have options after the acceptance letters go out. Good luck!

You are right.
Mercersburg :
40 AP and Honors courses offered (2006-2007);
SAT (25%-75%): CR 593; M 603; WR 582 (2006 graduates);

My son's projected SAT verbal range is 590-690 and Math is 580-680.

Thanks. I can use this to project the school he apply.

Is he applying as a freshman for next year?
You'll need to set up tours and interviews quickly. Most of the schools will close for Christmas break in a few days. They'll reopen around January 3. Applications are due either January 15 or 30. I'm not sure if any are due by January 1.
I would get all of the teacher recommendation forms to the teachers and ask them to complete. Use the common app recommendations forms which the vast majority of the schools use. Then it'll be easy to have the teachers/school mail them to whichever schools your son decides to apply to.
