Equal education at Stony Brook and Boston U?

So I'm trying to decide between SUNY Stony Brook (I'd pay a few thousand for dorming, but there's loans for that if needed) and BU (probably be paying about 15-18k).

I'm between majors such as Math, Chemistry, Engineering, and maybe some other kind of science. I want to go to BU over SBU mainly because of the cities they're in but it is a bit more money. I'm just worried that the education at Stony might not be as good as at BU. Can someone dispel this?

I don’t think that the education is going to be all that different between the two, ESPECIALLY in Math. While BU might have better research opportunities in the sciences, the SUNYs are very underrated (especially for New Yorkers paying IS tuition) to the point that there shouldn’t be much of a (if any) difference in the quality of education education.

That said, I don’t think it’s worth going to BU for what’s going to end up being $60-80K more. That’s a lot of money. Is that really worth going to a different school than the people from your high school? I don’t think so.

Stony Brook actually accepts only 41% of its applicants to BU’s 58% (collegeboard). Take that for what it is.

I grew up in New Jersey and absolutely hate it, so I can understand why you’d want to go off and try something new, but those majors are so general that every school is going to have a solid department. I just don’t feel like it’s worth going to BU at the price it’s going to cost you… If you’re a smart girl/guy, you’ll be able to land a job (or scholarship to grad school) wherever you want after SUNY.

Best of luck.
