Equivalent to Being Held Back 1 Year

I am a rising senior applying to Brown ED with the Brown/RISD 5 year Dual Program.

Basically, by the end of the program, I will have 1 degree from RISD and 1 degree from Brown = 2 degrees total.

However, I will go to med school after undergrad.
I always thought the path to becoming a doctor is 4 years undergrad, then 4 years med school.

If I do 5 years undergrad, then 4 years med school, I will be 1 year older than everyone else.

This is driving my crazy. Being older than everyone in med school will feel exactly like having been held back a year.

Is my logic correct? Or did I get the 4+4 med school path wrong?

Please help. I am freaking out.

Thank you

You got the 4+4 part right, but that doesn’t mean everyone goes straight through. Some take time off and others do post baccs. You won’t be older than everyone else by a long shot:

Not even an issue, my DD took a year off between undergrad and med school and there are few students younger than her, but many older.

Take a deep breath! If your passion is to do the 5 year program - just do it. If you don’t do it now, when else can you? Unless money is an issue, address your passions while they are still passions. Later in life, passions get smothered by needs and exigencies of life.

That is awesome advice. I am emailing that quote to myself so I can remember it.

Thank you to everyone who replied! <3

NO…you will NOT be a year older than everyone else. You will actually be YOUNGER than a whole bunch of folks.

Many don’t apply to med school until they’ve worked for awhile. And many college students don’t apply to med school til the summer after they graduate.

You’ll find that many first year med students are 25 years old and OLDER…some in their 30s…some may be in their 40s!!! Some have been married for awhile, some have kids, etc.
