ER deadline for materials

I'm an US permanent resident applying from Europe.

When I previously asked the UM admissions office, they clearly stated that the ER deadline is based on the POSTMARK for all materials.

Questions for Early Response [Incident: ]
Response ()10/12/2009 09:27 AM Hello

1) The Early Response deadline is a POSTMARKED DEADLINE, no matter where the materials are coming from.

2) The College Board (SAT Board) needs to have MAILED OUT THE SCORES as of November 1st. Therefore, the October test is the last that we accept for the Early Response deadline.

3) SAT Subject Tests are not required for admission, but will be considered when reviewing the application.

Good-luck with your academic endeavors! Go Blue!

I ordered my TOEFL scores report on the 26th of October and the ETS said that they will mail the scores out on the 30th of October, which is clearly before the ER deadline.

And today I called the UM admissions office, and they say that it is true that the deadline for all materials is based on its postmark, but for test scores, they must be RECEIVED by the 1st of November.

The lady on the phone said that she can't guarantee for my application to by qualified as ER.

Then what was the point of saying that the ER deadline is a POSTMARKED DEADLINE and the testing agency must MAIL OUT THE SCORES as of the 1st of November?

ETS says that my TOEFL scores will be received by UM after about 4~5 days once it's mailed out on the 30th of October.

I paid for international priority mail and submitted everything on the 22nd of October to meet the ER deadline, but now I might be not qualified for ER because of this stupid "misunderstanding".

bad bad day
.....

I wouldn’t worry. Because it’s rolling admission, if you get your application done soon after November 1st you’ll get your decision soon after December 24th.

^ Actually based on info from last year, a lot of people didn’t hear back anything until April 16th. If you don’t make the ER deadline, then I don’t think they defer you at all, so you’re looking at either accept/reject/WL, and it could take a while if your stats are borderline.

-SAT

Applying for College of Engineering

Do you think I’m on the borderline? Or will I more likely be rejected?

So do you count as an international student or U.S? Is the Math score Math I or Math II? Any extracurriculars or science/math awards? I’d say you have a decent shot, but it’s not a safety. Sorry about my incorrect info in the other post, hopefully you get everything in on time!

My best friend last year applied on November 6th and got accepted December 24th

If you were instate I think you would have a decent chance due to all your stats falling within their average, but since your international that may put you at reach but not impossible. You also seem to mention that many students from your school get accepted into some of the worlds most notable universities which indicates your school may be prestigeous ( ?).

I’m an US permanent resident so I’m considered as a domestic OOS applicant.
The SAT 2 math is Math 2 and I’ve earned highly commended math awards/ Academic honor rolls at my school every year

Extracurriculars

 • Taught math at Tanzania for a month during the summer, helped students in my age get ready for their national exams this october.
 • Made a group for Korean percussion and taught students at my school
 • Team captain for Math competition
 • Participated at The Hague Model United Nations
 • Member of International Honor Society

I thought that UM cares more about grades than my extracurricular activities and essays?

I really do hope I get in, regardless of the ER issue.

So will there be a great difference between being qualified as an ER applicant and being considered as a RD applicant?
I’m worried that losing my status as an ER applicant will dwindle my chances of getting in.

I’m afraid not making the ER deadline will hurt your chances. I heard from an admissions person at U of M that around 75% of the students admitted are from ER. You’re now fighting for much fewer seats, so it’ll be much more competitive.
