ERC too secluded..is it safe?

Visited SD last week and really liked it. My parents are worried that ERC where I would be going is too secluded and far from everything else and worry if it's safe. I also heard there were thefts of from one of the girls suites. Can anyone at ERC please comment? Thanks.

I live in ERC and just got shanked yesterday.

think someone in erc got raped… no joke. like literally raped, not what u say when u own someone in a video game.

It may be the furthest from the center of campus, but it’s definitely not “secluded.” It’s just a continuation of ridge walk… it literally melds into Marshall. Why would it not be safe compared to other parts of campus?

A local guy told us there were a couple of rapes last year, not necessarily at ERC. But my impression is that UCSD is probably safer than average for a large campus. Sadly, it is not like CalTech where I saw laptops and phones just sitting around unattended. One thing I did notice on admit day was that is was easy to get “lost” and end up in some fairly deserted dead ends and little used pathways between buildings. And this was on a sunny day with the place swarming with visitors. So I wonder what it’s like for a new student, say a female alone, to travel around at night between colleges.
Thanks for any ideas/experiences.

These links say that there was a rape in November 2008 and two in 2005-2006 but that all three took place in off campus apartments in University City, not directly on campus.

Students can get escorts to walk with them across campus if they feel uncomfortable. You can request them for free by calling the police non-emergency number or by using one of the dozens of emergency telephones located around campus. The campus has its own police department, and student community service officers ride bikes around campus until 1:00am (maybe later?). As far as “getting lost” goes, yeah, the campus is pretty confusing for new students. But it won’t take long to get used to it… and it really isn’t as confusing as it probably seems at first. Also, it isn’t unusual for people to walk around campus alone late at night. People just don’t seem to worry about anything bad happening (and for good reason… violent crimes are extremely rare).

Obviously, you might want to be careful walking through a parking lot or a parking structure in the middle of the night, if you’re alone… But that’s just common sense.

I’m in ERC and I love the openness of it. I don’t know if you visited, but the dorms and one row of the apartments face each other with a huge grassy area in the middle. There are constantly security guards roaming around. I have never felt unsafe (I’m a girl). As for the secluded pathways, at night I always take the more open routes (aka Ridge Walk) instead of the forest trails. Also - the CSO escorts mentioned just above are amazing.
Seriously don’t worry about safety! It’s La Jolla. Exercise common sense and you’ll be fine.

P.S. - thefts in rooms generally do not happen unless you leave your door unlocked.

Do watch out for bike theft, though.

I shanked ManOfFaith two days ago.

The school and city are ridiculously safe. The few incidents (ie. the groper earlier this year) we hear about are the only things happening, and that’s pretty damn safe for a college campus.

ERC is the dirty, ugly, scuzzy part of campus. some dude shot himself to death in the parking lot not too long ago and in the same parking lot some girl got raped.

What’s the point of posting a sarcastic jerk like response? Starting college and moving away from home is quite a big step for a young person.

i went to school @ ucsd and this is my honest thought about ERC. im not being sarcastic at all. relative to the other parts of campus like warren, marshall, sixth, ERC is the least attractive in looks right next to muir. i don’t think its a coincidence that muir is right next to ERC.

^okay FIRST of all, muir is not right next to ERC. ERC is brand new and beautiful and completely safe.

Second of all - you’re actually NOT funny. Stop making sarcastic remarks, it makes you look really immature.

my bad. for some reason i thought the OP was talking about revelle. i completely take away everything i said. major brain fart. ERC is actually a really nice place.

but i do mean what i said if it was revelle.

^Sorry for getting angry  that makes more sense

soo whyy go to UC San Diego over a more prestigious private school [CMU]
yes there is the 50 K difference, and i know the whole weather deal, but how is the college experience/ what do students do on weekends?

UCSD major:bioeng:biotech CMU major: chemE/BME

There are a lot of threads about what people do on weekends.

As far as prestige goes, ucsd is actually better (as far as your majors go). Our bioengineering program is in the top three in the nation (graduate level, anyway). CMU doesn’t even make the top ten, for either bioeng or chemE

i’m going for a bachelor’s…does their rep still apply?
and although the programs may not be in the top 10, carnegie makes it on the top for almsot any other ranking

^It seems you have already made your decision. If you love Carnegie so much then go there!!
