So everyone's been talking about building their schedules and what classes they are taking next year.. I'm a lost little incoming freshman and have no idea what to do. Help!

I'm at Viterbi, Undeclared Engineering. Which classes should I take? How many classes can I take? Which ones are required?

There’s some common overlap between all eng majors…GE’s, calc, physics, sometimes chem. those ought to keep you busy for now:)

Also, if you’re leaning toward a particular major but haven’t decided yet, you can take the “introduction to X engineering” major in that department, like EE 105, EE 106, AME 101, AME 105, etc., instead of the generic ENGR 101 “introduction to engineering” class

edit: you will probably take 4 classes your 1st semester - and don’t worry, you’ll meet with an advisor to help you with your schedule

I am in the same situation. I am a business major student and have NO idea what classes I have / should choose?
Are there must take classes? Which classes are more popular?
Thanks !!

Its a little harder to say what you’re gonna take when you’re undeclared, but here are the course sequences for engineering, scroll down a bit. Your tuition covers 18 units so you can take up to 18 without paying more.

I’m a business major, but not completely sure I want to stay in business. Also, I do not want a difficult schedule first semester. I would rather have time to settle in. This is the recommended first semester schedule for Marshall:
MATH 118
Principles
of Calculus
ECON 203
Microeconomics
WRIT 140
Freshman
Writing
GE
Category VI
Social
Issues

Do you think it would be more beneficial for me to take cat VI, writing 140, math 118 and then another GE instead of another business course?

As for how many classes you can take, 18 units is the max I believe and 12 being the minimum to be considered a full-time attendee. You can argue to do more than 18, but you would have to submit a convincing letter of why you would need to.

oh, hey, pinkie, i noticed we both had the same digits at the end of our usernames.

Generally, most business majors I know took Categorry 6 and Writ 140 first semester, an Econ class (203 was full for many of us by the time orientation came, so many take 205 first), and Math118. However, if you pass out of Math118, then most will take BUAD304. This isn’t a very difficult course load as most people take it who are business majors. However, if you think you will transfer out of business, I’d recommend taking another GE unless the major you want to switch into requires econ.

In your first two years, work on getting ahead and/or exploring majors. Use your “extra” 2 units each semester for the fun elective - freshmen seminars, PE, sailing, etc… Then as a Junior and Senior - when your classes get tougher or you study abroad - having flexibility in your schedule will be invaluable.

I agree alamemom on this. I’d suggest trying to get ahead. Especially because GE’s tend to be generally easier (if you choose the “right” ones), and if you can fit in a more difficult class earlier on incase of piling them all for junior/senior year, that should help tremendously.

Some take 16, some use the extra units. It depends on the person, major, and workload. Alot of people take fun and easy classes like PE, or improv, or dance.
