error when submitting signature page

My DS hit submit for his first 3 common app schools today (all with November 1 EA deadlines).

However, for one of them, we paid successfully (and got an email confirming that), and it did bring him to the signature page, but when he submitted the signature, he got an error. For that school he did not receive the "successfully submitted" email. However on the Common App site it shows that he has "successfully applied".

Possibly coincidentally, that was also the only school out of the first 3 that we had to pay for. (One is free to all online applicants, and our state school is free to apply in-state before the EA deadline.)

Has anyone had an issue like this submitting the signature page? Should he contact the school to see if they've received his application?

Hi mathmomvt, we had exactly the same thing happen. If you got the green check on you dashboard showing submitted you are ok. I received an answer to that effect from the common ap people early this morning. This afternoon I noticed that the application has been downloaded by the college which means it definitely went through. Don’t panic if your college hasn’t downloaded. This school was unusually fast (3 schools submitted a week ago still haven’t downloaded). If you are really concerned email the admissions counselor for your area at the college to confirm they received it. Might give them a day or two first.

I feel your pain :)

Thanks for the reply lab317. Do you mean that within the common app you can see which schools have downloaded?

Yes. If you go to my colleges then click on a college then on assign recommenders it will say one of the following: not started, started, submitted or downloaded. If it says submitted it is ready for the college to download. If it says downloaded then the college has completed downloading the ap and recs etc. if it says started or not started your recommenders still haven’t successfully submitted their recs and you will have to bug them.

Our school is using naviance, and it doesn’t look like we can see anything about recommenders within CA. Under assign recommenders, it just has a big block of text essentially saying “your school uses naviance”.

Oh darn! I am so sorry. I don’t know anything about Naviance. I suggest your D contact the recommenders and make sure they submitted their recs. if they have then email the college directly. We said something like, with all the problems the common ap is having just wanted to check that you received everything.

Good luck! I am sorry I don’t know about Naviance

Same thing happened to me. I applied to 3 schools today, didn’t pay for a single app. The 1st and 3rd ones brought me to the error page, whereas the 2nd one was submitted successfully, and I got the confirmation email. On the dashboard, it says they were all submitted tho.
Also, for Naviance, if you log into your account, it will show whether or not the recs are completed. I requested two teachers, one of them completed it, and it said “completed” on the screen

Our school uses Naviance. After application is submitted on CA, son has to request transcript on Naviance. Then he turns in a form to counselor, who then uploads the transcript, school report, her LOR, and the teacher LORs. Then you will see the teacher’s names on the assign recommenders page.

We can see in Naviance that the recs aren’t yet uploaded. (At least one of the recommenders has tried and failed – she’s still working on it!)

But I don’t know if there’s any way to see if the college has received/downloaded anything yet (other then them sending an email or something, which has not yet happened).

My school uses Naviance on my common app is says recommenders name and either submitted or dowloaded

Here is my experience with the whole Naviance/CA mess. From looking on Naviance, you can see if your teachers have finished their LOR’s(goes from Requested to Completed). You can see when transcripts are sent. If your counselors are with it, you can see on “details” exactly what was sent to each school. On the common app, you will then see if counselor has uploaded their parts(will say submitted) and whether the teachers have uploaded their LORs(will also say submitted). Once the schools download that info off the Common App, it will say downloaded. If you want the "big picture, that is, whether everything made it to the school, you will have to use the schools method to check application status. All are different. Some you access a portal, some you send an inquiry, etc.

Thanks, Parent1337!

We can see under office status “Initial materials submitted”. Nothing more under “details”.

We haven’t looked back at the CA since the initial materials submitted showed up, so I’m not sure if anything shows up there yet or not. Will check tomorrow.

If the school “receives” the initial application and the counselor materials show up in the CA, will they change to “downloaded” for that particular school?

Big picture will obviously only come later, after the school acknowledges the application and sends portal information (for most schools). Just looking for whatever evidence we can get that the school “got” the app ok before they acknowledge it.

I think the only clue you will get that the school has gotten the app is when your GC materials or teacher LORs go from “Submitted” to “Downloaded”. Even then, that is not foolproof as some schools receive the materials and it stays at “Submitted”. Son had applications submitted back in early August that we came to find out weren’t even downloaded by the schools till October. There was no way to tell until the portal info came or I found “check application status” links on the websites.

GC materials were “sent” in Naviance a week ago but Common App shows only the amber button. Is it supposed to show “submitted”?

I think it should. I was on phone with GC when she submitted her materials and the CA immediately showed “Submitted”

The school in question shows as having downloaded the school report, so I guess they got the application. Phew.

Our GC says that the report has been sent and Naviance shows that. But CA does not show anything at all. The teacher recommendation shows up on CA as assigned and downloaded. The GC seems overloaded as it is, hate to raise it again if it is not an issue.

That’s their job. Don’t feel bad asking them to do their job. It took 14 emails one day for me to get the letters of recommendation from Naviance to the CA. I didn’t feel bad at all. If nothing shows under your “assign recommenders” section on the individual schools, something is incorrect. Does your GC’s name at least show on the CA?

No, not under assign recommenders area. It does in a different area where it asked for the school GC name. As soon as Naviance and CA were linked there was no capability to assign teachers or GC in the CA.

Under my son’s individual schools under “My Colleges”>assign recommenders, below counselor has always shown the counselors name and date invited via Naviance. It looks like this:

XXXXX XXXXXXX School Counselor Invited: 8/27/2013

School Report Downloaded: 10/2/2013

Optional Report

Mid Year Report

Final Report
