Errors on essays - Did you get accepted anyway?

My son is swamped with college essays now and I can't help but wonder what if a grammar or usage error slips in and goes out with the essay?

Does anyone have examples of acceptance inspite of having errors on the essay?

I had one or two minor errors in my essays for Michigan and still got in. I proofread them a hundred times and had my mom and friends read them, but inevitably something slipped through. I can’t believe an admissions decision would be based SOLELY on an essay, particularly an otherwise good essay that has one or two little mistakes.

PCP - I don’t really know how to take you there, but look up “Clam Fart”. A student on CC put it on his application as an EC, I believe. Or his friend did. And he hit the “send” button before taking it off the app. So funny…and a true store, too. And he was accepted to the college in the end.

Best read. I was laughing so hard I was in tears.

My kid had several errors in his essay to Amherst, he got in. It’s funny how carefully you can proofread, have mom and dad proofread, and not see those errors until you click “submit”!

This happened long ago but my (ex)H spelled medicine as “medecine” on all his med school applications . . . he got in everywhere he applied.

All the posts so far have been very encouraging. The “Clam Fart” thread made my day a lot more productive after I stopped laughing. Thanks for the reference.

My son put in a “snarky” comment about his mother, who was reading all his essays, just to see if she was really reading them. She caught it and made him delete it. However, he forgot to “save” and when it came time to submit the application the snarky comment remained. He didn’t realize it until several days later and figured “Oh well, I guess I’m not going there.” On April 1, he was accepted to this T20 school and with a $20K scholarship that he had not even applied for.

oldfort, the Clam Fart thread deserves the *Cream of CC *award! D and I were laughing hysterically on and off for several hours when we read it. It made my D feel much better about a couple of typos she had in her essays. D did not make it into the reach school, but I doubt the typos were the deal breakers. D had 7 acceptances to choose from, and she is happily blooming where she planted herself a year ago.

I am glad I remembered “Clam Fart”. I laughed so hard the first time I read it. It just went on and on and on…

The Clam Fart thread made my day! Son submitted an application a few days and did something similar on his ‘reason for choosing your major’ (it was a snarky comment) and didn’t let us see it before he submitted. Actually, he didn’t realize he was submitting it, he thought he was just paying the application fee. We’ve been in a dither about what to do. Email the admissions office or just hope the ad com will appreciate the fact that he very obviously filled out his own application (because an adult wouldn’t have put the snarky comment on it). I feel better, at least there is hope :)

My S was recently admitted to a college with a word accidentally left out of his essay. However, I’m not sure they actually read the essays…I think it was more of a “if you have the stats you’re in” type of place.
