Hi everyone. I'm not a regular on CC but scounging through threads to find details on the Ervin Scholarship.
I found out I was a finalist today =] and am excited but not sure what happens next. The page mentions a finalist weekendMarch 25-28th). Is this mandatory? And are we supposed to come for a day or the entire weekend? I already have an acceptee commitment at another school and now I don't know what to do.

Also, are the tickets for just the student or for a parent as well? Do we make our own staying arrangements or does the office to that for us?

And, if we are named a finalist does not mean:
1) we've been accepted to WashU?
2) we are guaranteed some amount of money (half-tuition and compete for full)?

Log in to the pathway on the Wash U website, click on scholarships. This will show for which scholarships you have been chosen. Then click on Ervin. This will show you your next steps. Wash U will pick up the entire cost of the 3 night stay - airfare, lodging in the dorm room of a student and meals. As for your last question “we are guaranteed some amount of money (half-tuition and compete for full)?” I am still trying to figure that one out. I guess we could call admissions. If you find out, please let me know. Congratulations!!!

I believe being named a finalist does mean that you will be accepted into Wash U, but does not mean you will receive scholarship money. You receive scholarship money if you are choosen as an Ervin Scholar during the Scholars weekend.

The Ervin Scholars Committee will evaluate applications and invite finalists to Washington University for personal interviews. To remain eligible for the scholarships, finalists will need to come to Washington University March 25-28, 2010, for the interviews and related activities. Washington University will pay all expenses for this trip to St. Louis.

Multiple scholarships—each with full tuition and a $2,500 annual stipend—are awarded each year; partial scholarships may also be awarded. The scholarships support four years of undergraduate study if the Ervin Scholar maintains a satisfactory academic record and meets the expectations of the program.

Crozet1225: Good to hear from a fellow Ervin Finalist! As for your concerns about whether or not the weekend is mandatory: I’m pretty certain that it is. You could try calling the school (either WashU or the school that you hold the pecious commitment to) and ask them if you could reschedule but if not then I guess you will just have to choose which school you’d like to take a shot at.

Hope to see you at the Finalist Weekend! :)

Boomie: Thanks. I presume you’re a finalist as well? If so, congrats! The director of the program, I believe, returned my call today. We are not guaranteed a scholarship but most people who come do receive some sort of money.

JCR, AVHS: Some of this is incredibly vague/confusing so thank you for helping decipher the notification.

Eagles: Thank you! Best of luck to you too!

HereToSucceed: First, congrats! Your sn clearly hit the mark =].
That’s what I’m going to do. I had already scheduled an interview/open house at Georgetown for Early Students and had a friend from here going as well. I’ll call them tomorrow and hopefully reschedule in which case I’ll be going to St. Louis for the first time in March. =]

All Ervin Finalists: Two questions:
If you don’t mind, where will you be flying in from and what’s is your ethnicity?
I’m from VA and have South Asian parents. I was looking at the website and wasn’t sure if the scholarship is geared towards African American students or if all students engaging diversity are qualified.

The program was originally only offered to African American students but it was opened up to all students who value diversity within the last couple of years.

Hello everyone and congrats to all! I just found out today, although I have not yet been contacted formally. I am African American and I’m from Oklahoma.

Does anyone know exactly what they mean by “partial” scholarships? Isn’t it that for some of the programs they only give out either half or full (and is Ervin one of those?)?

Ervin awards both half and full tuition scholarships. Both half and full include an annual stipend of $2,500 in addition to the tuition scholarship. Both the Ervin and Rodriguez were opened up to all students for the 2005 freshman class.

Congrats to all the Ervin finalists! I recieved the full tuition Ervin in the ED pool, so I’m looking forward to seeing you all in March! But yeah, they give out both full and partials, but you find out if you got the full, partial, or not the scholarship after the interviews. There is a group on facebook for WashU admitted students, and since you all are scholarship finalists, you’re pretty much been accepted into the school. On the group there’s also a disscussion board for Ervin scholars. I would be free to accept any of you guys that are Ervin finalists on facebook.
