Essay #1412

Do people learn who they are only when they are forced into action?

Thanks guys'! :-D

People seem to believe that they know who they are without having a global perspective of who they truly are. When people are compelled to act, they see themselves. It is through examples extracted from literature, history, and personal insight that the validity of this statement is bolstered.

Emerging from a literature aspect, one of the most analogous to finding himself through action is Edmond Dantes from Alexandre Dumas’ The Count of Monte Cristo. Toward the introduction of the tome, Dantes is given this grandiose life of a middle-class Frenchman. It is when Danglas and Cadarousse nefariously frame Dance with treason that he is sequestered to the Chateau D’If. This is the time period where Dantes apprehends not only who set him up, but also the flame of vengeance that burns in his heart; he is an altered person. From then on, Dantes realizes the type of person he is: spiteful and revengeful. The “testing” from Danglars and Cadarousse is the catalyst that showcases Dantes’ personality to himself.

In relation to current affairs, Martha Stewart pops up as a person that learns who they are after a malicious scandal. Known to her audience as a woman that assisted in disseminating advice on how to be the “perfect” housewife, became a crook in 2002 when she was found to have inside traded with the stocks of ImClone. It is through a serious and somber mood of a tumultuous scandal that Stewart found who she was, who she represented, and who she wanted to be: Martha Stewart.

On a personal notation, it is through my springing nto action that I found who I was. It was 9th grade when my friend Veronica was being criticized for the manner in which she dressed (nerdy, if you will). When this heinous antagonism occurred, I stood up for her; I let her bullies have what they deserved, a vocal punishment. I found out who I was in effect to my taking upon the situation: a true, amiable friend.

All in all, it is with action that we find out who we truly are. We find out also that emotions take our better part, and cause us to execute the correct, moral duty; we shine our personalities.

Bump this up for the day.

please grade my essay =)

its good... i would say at LEAST 10-12. if i were to suggest improvement, i would say drop the martha stewart paragraph and beef up the other two... but this isnt an english class (sat essays emphasize length over quality a lot of the time so i think it serves ur purpose). how u and other people get 400+ words in 25 minutes remains a mystery to me, i usually max at like 300.

thanks!

Any other examples I could've/should've utilized?

i think that your examples are great.

Here's a history one that popped into my head.

Erwin Rommel originally believed himself to be a strong supporter of the Nazi party "on the outside", but over the course of WWII, he began to have a change of heart (due to the actions of the germans) and may have found who he truly was. ( It is rumored that he eventually went as far as to try to arrange an assasination of hitler. )

I would advise going in depth in one example instead of having many.

Same. After practice, I found out that although people always say you should have 3 examples (5 paragraph essay style), going in depth and exploring sometimes even 1 example thoroughly will earn you the elusive 12.
