Please respond to two of the prompts below. One of your essays should be short (about 250 words), and one essay should be longer (about 500 words).
8. If you have written an essay for another school’s application that you really like, feel free to use it as your short or long essay for us. Please be sure to tell us (a) what essay you are answering and (b) why you think this essay represents you well (your explanation will not be included in the word count).

My COMMONAPP essay powerfully reflects my profile/background in the admission process, but my COMMONAPP essay is 832 words.

QUESTION: Can I still use my essay?

totally, use it, just reduce it at least to 600 words if you can. good luck

UNC has claimed that they do not count words, but an essay that is over 800 words is a bit excessive for a prompt that requires 500. I would look at certain paragraphs in your essay that can be cut to get closer to the word count.

Definitely cut it down if you can. I used my Elon essay for option 8 and I cut it down from about 750+ to closer to 550. You may have to change some wording to cut out unnecessary words, but if you’re below 600 it probably won’t be a big deal.

Yes, you really want to cut it down. Also, if you are going with that 8th essay option, you really need to make sure you have a good explanation for why you want to send that essay. Otherwise, it just seems like you are a little lazy/ recycling an essay, and not putting forth the effort. If you have a good explanation though, and you really do think the essay provides insight about you, then by all means use it.
