What do people think about writing an essay about something other than my most important EC or the typical overcoming-adversity thing? If I just choose a topic that’s pretty ordinary (like my favorite book or movie) but still write about it well and make sure my personality comes through, is that ok? I think it might be refreshing to read an essay that isn’t about school clubs or community service. Any opinions?

Apparently no one has any opinion on the subject...

There are tons of essays not about school clubs or CS that don't resort to book report. I think favorite book or movie is not a good idea becuase it is pretty narrow. It is important to get your perspective/personality/values/ideas across, but to spend so much on one book or movie is not going to do it.

In fact, the approach you're thinking of is reccomended, just probably not about a fav book or movie. But I don't know, it could work, you never know until you've written it

You can probably quote the most memorable lines from the book/movie and use it as an epigraph or ending, but that's only if they have some relevance to what you're writing about.

I think it depends on who the essay is for.Writing about something not so commercial like a play or a book can be looked upon as being more unique and it's a way of pleasing the reciever of the essay. Also writing about a book or something may cause controversy as people have various views on the same things and may turn into a plitical issue in the classroom.....which is one way to get out of listening to rambling tutors!

is anyone putting an epigraph before his essay?

^ I tired, but decided it wasn’t the best idea.
