I want to write a personal statement of my experience in band class, and my transcript would show that I've 3 years in band. I heard that because colleges know that I've taken band class, they prefer that I write something else because they already know about me taking the class. Is this true?</p>

<p>While writing about band is a pretty common topic, there’s nothing wrong with elaborating on an experience that is already listed elsewhere on your application. Your essay can provide insights that a brief mention on an activities list can’t possibly offer. In fact, one of the best essays I ever read was about playing in a truly terrible high school band. This essay showed off the applicant’s sense of humor as well as her ability to write well. </p>
<p>So if you feel that you can write about your band experience in a meaningful and memorable way, then don’t shy away from the topic just because your band involvement isn’t breaking news to admission committees.</p>
