I'm not really sure I understand the application process.

Can you choose between using the common app or the JHU one or is it just a choice between essays? Or would you have to do both essays?

I'm just curious because I've already got a decent common app 500word essay and I'm wondering if I can apply to JHU with just that or if I have to do the $10 one which has me a little stumped.

So you can do the common app and if you want to, you can add the JHU $10 one?

I'm still kinda confused.

Extra essay, um, okay for the common app because I already have that...now I guess I'm trying to see how that essay would work into JHU's app? I dunno, confusing.

You should probably just give up now and not apply... I'm sure there's a good community college in your area somewhere... lol j/k... I just want as little competition in that ED application pool as possible

soumanyon, when i was visiting the campus i went to the information session and the admissions person explained it like this. JHU accepts the common application, however, while they say that the essays for the common app are sufficient they HIGHLY RECOMMEND that you also complete the essays on the jhu supplement. i don't think i'd waste the time filling out the separate jhu application. use the common app you already finished, but be aware that they definitely prefer to see their own essays. hope that helps... good luck!

i think it's really up to the adcoms whether or not they ever look at supplemental materials. this goes for extra essays, letters or rec, or letters you write to them to add to your file. sending them probably wont hurt you, but there's a chance that they wont make a difference at all because they might not even be looked at.

In the case of JHU, the $10 essay will almost certainly be looked at. When you send supplementals, it's anybody's guess if they get looked at. If the college has optional supplementals, then why wouldn't they look at them :p

I posted this message a while back, but I think it is time to post it again...

"if you complete the common application for JHU, you only need to submit the common application essays. HOWEVER, Hopkins does encourage you to (as the supplement states) do their two essays instead of or in addition to your common app. essay.

In fact, the adcoms at Hopkins STRONGLY ENCOURAGE that you do the Hopkins essays as they prefer seeing the creativity and originality of applicants' $10 essays, and also appreciate the information one can provide in the "class" essay.

My recommendation is that you do the $10 essay. When admissions people "stongly encourage" I take that as a requirement."

"Can I mix forms from the Common Application and the Johns Hopkins application? Can I mix online application materials with snail mail materials?

To apply to Johns Hopkins University you must submit either the Johns Hopkins University application Part I and Part II OR the Common Application and Johns Hopkins Common Application supplement. Please be sure that you apply with both the Part I and Part II of the JHU application or the Common App. and Hopkins supplement do not mix these forms. For the Common Application, you may submit the application online and mail the supplement. "
