Essay Choices

So I'm in a bit of a predicament while writing my essays. I had no idea what to write about in the first place, but I came up with two ideas. I need some help choosing between them. I've started writing both, but I have yet to finish either. If anyone could give some advice I would really appreciate it! These are my two ideas:

-An essay about my piano teacher's influence throughout my life. I've been really active in Band and Government and my teacher was very influential in promoting these interests. Throughout the essay, I connect a lot of the experiences I've had with her to experiences that I would later pursue extracurricularly.

-Last year my mom was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. She had surgery and is now cancer-free. I was going to document the experience and eventually tie it into the need for affordable/accessible health care. The few times that I have written about the experience (for scholarships and such) it makes me a bit uncomfortable and I hope that this doesn't effect the quality of the essay much. I feel like this experience could be a hook and I realize that my perspective could be a valuable one for an undergrad population. On the other hand, I wouldn't really have the opportunity to mention any of my activities and sometimes it seems like that's a valuable part of the essay in the eyes of the adcoms.

I think I'm a pretty good writer (everybody says that on here lol). I got an "A" in my college writing class, so it should be a solid essay. Either way, any advice would really clear things up.

read this.

hello
both are nice ideas, but i believe the first one will show more passion and that's exactly what you want
and not to mention, i think college admissions counselors get a lot about cancer and diseases and stuff.. something personal (not that cancer isnt) and positive would be funner to read i think :)
