Today I received an email from a Harvard admissions counselor stating that my Common App personal essay did not upload properly and that I needed to re-send it to her via email. I did and that should be no problem, but I have a couple of questions: first off, I originally submitted my application in October... I realize that they receive TONS of applications and some are just getting their first look now, but has my application file really been sitting there, unopened for 5 months? It just seems odd that they would wait until now to notify me that my essay didn't upload properly. Also, should I be concerned that other schools might not be able to view my personal essay? It's sitting there in my Common App, and I can definitely view it, but could it be possible that my other schools didn't get it as well? (I would hope they would have contacted me by now about it...) Thanks!

In case, if other schools aren’t able to see your essay, they will notify you. Just sit back, relax and keep checking for emails.

Did you by any chance use a mac to do your common app?

This is purely anecdotal, but my two best friends used macs on their applications and they both had the exact same problem. One initially sent her ED application at 11:50 pm the day it was due and by the time the university emailed her, she barely barely barely got it to the AdCom in time for ED decisions.

As it happens, I did use a mac for my common app. Did your friends both apply ED, as in did they only have one school to worry about? If they sent their common app to other schools, was it a problem across the board or just at one school? No other schools have contacted me about it being a problem, so I’m trying to figure out if it was just Harvard that couldn’t view the essay.

Ah, perhaps there is a similar issue between the three of you then. The friend that applied ED only sent one application, but the other sent a couple applications… I only recall one problem each.

However, after the first ED incident with my friend, I hounded both of them to make sure they sent the rest of their stuff off of PCs.
