ESSAY: EXAMPLE brainstorm thread

Hey guys... Since I always have a TON of difficulty coming up with examples to use in the essay, I thought we could brainstorm some general ones together that can be used for different topics. (we did this in my prep class)

I always run out of time because I spend too much time thinking about what to write... I hope other people can benefit from this topic too! Hopefully once we get a good list I can compile and put it together in an easy-to-use format for each of us to have and review!

So, to start... I've usually been able to use To Kill a Mockingbird in my essays...

Catcher in the Rye, if you cant get something from that one, my all time favorite

Don't go for obscure stuff, like "The secret life of bees" or sth. Go with the classics!

Is there anything wrong with using personal experience? Why does everyone on CC come up with these literary things?

you should think of it in terms of how the examiners view it: the fact is that literary and historical examples are more academic, not that a personal instance would abate your score...

While it may not abate your score, in my sense, it puts a limit.
Let's say that writers supporting their point with a couple of "personal experiences" rarely get an 8+.

Native son by Richard Wright--really good book, easy to read, and the interior layered meanings of the story are easy to understand.

I personally hate The Lord of the Flies, so I would most likely never use it in an essay, but I've heard that many people think it's one of the best books for the SAT essay.

The Bridge of St. Luis Rey
The Great Gatsby
They are good books to use

Yep!
Lot's of people around here esteem Gatsby. I'm ordering it right away.
