Essay explaining gpa?

I have two questions today.

The first is simple - how do you mention having a relatively low gpa in an application essay? Do you explain why?

The second relates to my chances.
Gpa: 3.65
ACT composite: 33
(I can post individual scores if requested)

EC's
Track, Cross country, tennis, swimming
Model United Nations
National Honors Society
Lots of volunteering

As far a classes go I have taken all honors classes when available and a total of 5 AP's including next year (senior year)
This includes Calculus BC and AP physics.

I have been in several drafting/engineering competitions and have done well.

What is the best engineering school I have a good chance of getting in to?

Answers to either questions are appreciated!

You don’t. Your GPA isn’t low. Your GPA+ACT scores can still get you into some good schools, so there’s no need for explanation. Unless you have a serious reason for explanation (like severe medical issues or severe home environment), there is no point in doing so.

As I said before you could get into some good schools with your stats. What schools interest you?

My two dream schools are Stanford and MIT - Realistically, I realize that I most likely don’t have a chance at these until graduate school

Carnegie Melon and UofM are two that I am more seriously considering.

UMich shouldn’t give you too many problems. Carnegie Mellon might be tougher, so I’d recommend applying ED there if it’s your number one.

Should I mention my gpa in my essays? It isn’t on par with my act score and is mostly due me not trying at all freshman year, it’s over a 4.0 for this semester.

for Umiami you should have no problems. However with colleges these days there is no telling who would be accepted and rejected anymore. One can only assume. I think your work in the engineering department is impressive. Also if you are a decent runner i would try to be recruited as a walk on.

Don’t explain gap. Explaining low gpa is like making an excuse for it. Your gap isn’t that low
