<p>For Freshman applicants on the Application Checklist it says something about writing an essay, but on the Common App it didn't have any place to write an essay; just a CV. </p>

<p>It may depend on the major. My son applied to Game Design (HASS) and they required an essay as well as an optional portfolio.</p>
<p>I’m applying as a Computer Science major, and on the checklist it said that a general personal statement would suffice, but like I said: there was no place on the common app to write an essay, and the checklist mentioned submitting it with your application.
Did your son submit the essay separately from his application?</p>
<p>No. It was part of the Common App and listed as the writing supplement. However I think it said something about a personal statement and to reference his portfolio in his response.</p>
