Essay Grade?

Another essay to critique if you wouldnt mind. Also if you have any advice could you share it, the PR's LiveGrader gives me hardly any advice just a score (which I don't trust as much as the scores given by posters here).

Assignment: Is censorship sometimes justified? Plan and write an essay in which you develop your point of view on this issue. Support your position with reasoning and examples taken from your reading, studies, experience, and observations.

United States Supreme Court Justice Thorgood Marshall states that, "a State has no business tellin' a man sittin' in his own home what books he may read or what films he may watch." Our great country is built on the foundation of free speech. If a man has something to say, he will not be persecuted for it. Censorship does not have a place in the grandiose capitalistic society of the United States, as evident through the fall of the former USSR and Arthur Miller's play, Death of a Salesman.

The former USSR was built through government intervention. The residents in the communist state had minimal rights and freedoms when compared to that of residents in a capitalistic society. Through examination, this lack of freedoms contributed heavily to the fall of the Communist Party. Citizens were not pleased with the amount of censorship and lack of freedom which they had been given. The government blocked out everything which they felt would portray them in a negative manner. In turn, the people rebelled against the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics and thus lead to their demise.

Another example which highlights the negative effects of censorship occurs in Arthur Miller's scintillating novel, Death of a Salesman. The protagonist in the play, Willy Lohman, is shielded from the negative aspects of life; however, when Willy eventually discovers these aspects, he is driven into a deep state of depression and eventually commits suicide. Willy spends his life living vicariously through his two sons, who at first show a great deal of promise. Unfortunetly when his sons finally admit to being failures, Willy is unable to cope with this fact. Because Willy has never had to deal with negatives, as his sons have never been able to show him complete veracity, he is driven to a tragic decline.

The censorship of people is never justified. As highlighted through the former USSR and the play, Death of a Salesman, censorship can only lead to a decline on society. As the great Aristotle once stated, " A man must be free too know and do as he pleases."
