Hey I was wondering if anyone could grade my essay. Also if you grade it could you give me a reason for the grade or any advice you have as well please? This was my first SAT essay so if there is a lot wrong with it then that is part of the reason.
Assignment: Do we need to be faced with hard choices in order to understand the truth about who we are?
One of the most important questions that everyone needs to answer is who they are and what their purpose in life is. This question begins to become essential to answer towards the end of high school when students have to make the difficult decisions about what they want to do with their lives. This decision cannot just be blindly made. In order for one to decide what they wish to do with their life, one must first figure out who they are by gaining experience in life and making major life choices. Therefore based on life experiences of many, being faced with difficult decisions is essential to discovering self identity.
A perfect example of needing to face difficult choices to discover oneself is Steve Jobs. While Steve Jobs was a student at a university, he knew he had learned all that he needed to and he thus made the difficult decision to leave his university and to begin his journey towards creating one of the largest and most affluent corporations the world has ever seen, Apple. By facing the extremely difficult decision to leave one of the most prestigious universities in the world, Jobs was able to learn who he was: an innovator and an entrepreneur.
The son of a neighbor of mine whose name is Brian Jacobs is another example of facing important decisions being essential for the discovery of self identity. Brian graduated high school with the goal of becoming a physicist. Due to this Brian majored in physics at the University of New York. Brian quickly discovered that the physics major was not right for him. Although he enjoyed physics in high school, he was miserable at NYU. Although he was miserable, his experience at NYU ultimately led to Brian discovering his passion in life. While on Christmas break, Brian was in his home town and while at a library Brian was approached by a professor from NYU because the professor noticed Brian was wearing a NYU jacket. The professor and Brian began conversing and these moments were when Brian discovered his passion in life. Brian discussed that he was miserable as a physics major and this led to the discussion of the professor’s classes, marketing. Brian found the discussion of marketing to be very intriguing and this made Brian do research into marketing and eventually a major change. After graduating college as a marketing major Brian began working as a marketing executive in a major corporation in New York City. If Brian had not faced several difficult decisions he would have never discovered his passion for marketing and he would have never became the successful marketing director that he did become. For example, if Brian had not made the difficult decisions to become a physics major and to switch majors then Brian would not have ever truly understood his self identity and purpose in life.
To reiterate, difficult decisions are absolutely essential to discovering the truth about oneself. If no difficult decisions are made then no large mistakes can occur. If no large mistakes occur then there is nothing to learn from and ultimately what we learn about ourselves determines who we are.
