Assignment: Should heroes be deinfed as people who say what they think when we ourselves lack the courage to say it?

My essay:

While ostensibly people applaud for those who defend the weak with their physical strength, I believe people who voice their opinions at the risk of rejection can also be praised an be held as heroes. For instance, eveyone thinks superman as a world hero, saving many people from danger with his supernatural physical strength. But one does not necessarily have to have the physical strength to be a hero, because not all strong people have the courage to voice their opinions at the risk of rejection of their close ones.
I had a friend in school who was very mature, and therefore was never afraid to stand up for her moral righs in the midst of classmates who had disagreed with her. People in our lcass would talk and argue with the teachers, and she would be the only one who would always reproach the classmates for their bad behavior. Although our classmates threw her dirty looks and chastised her, she still did not give into peer pressure.
A historical example of this can be seen in Abraham Lincoln's heroic act of successfully bringing slavery to its end. Most landowners with slaves vehemently opposed to the abolition movement, but Lincoln pursued his moral senses, and clearly voiced his views on slavery. Being a classy, white man himself, Lincoln did not join the other slave owners despite the pressure he had for being a well-known President. I would not be surprised if Lincoln had stood up for his opinion, although he had expeected the dangers that would come along with it, which eventually did when he was shot bya a bitter man who supported slavery. The notion of heroism does not ahve to rest upon the traditional idea of the brave, strong figure saving people from physical dangers. As we've seen from these examples, people who simply voice their opinos can be held as heroes, for they put great influence on others, or even change the course of history.
