I'm beginning to think about/write my college essay/personal statement. I know the Common App for 2011-2012 does not come out until August, but I just wanted to get a head start.

I was thinking of writing about Math. I know this topic might seem a little strange and maybe offhanded at first, but I would like to write about my struggles with it and some of the "lessons" it has taught me throughout the years. I have never been particularly good at math, no matter how hard I've tried, i've always somehow received low-mid 80's. The idea of the essay isn't very developed at this point, it's really just an inkling of an idea, so I understand if nobody can REALLY help me. Any suggestions, ideas, questions?

The main points that your essay carries should be in line with the universities you are trying to apply. Each school has its own taste.

With that being said, I think you should start by asking yourself a question rather than making a statement (I’m going to talk about math), such as:

What activity do you enjoy doing the most? Why?
Talk about a time when you felt challenged. How did you overcome?
What is your greatest accomplishment?

Then your essay becomes focused on answering the question (your thesis) and supporting your answer (development). This way, you will be able to refine your material (in your case, math) based on your thesis.

I have always found that to be the easier way to write. The essays also come out much more enjoyable to read too.

Hope this helps. Let me know if you have more questions.
