i have been stuck on the 10 dollar essay for a week now and cannot come up with anything interesting that the adcoms would like...ie i keep coming up with boring stuff like movies or dinner with friends...

any ideas or suggestions for me? or anything to get me started like brainstorming tips or anything?

One really good advice that the admissions officer gave me last time I was at JHU was that I should'nt try to give a pretentious answer that I think they would want. I am sure you've heard this hundred times already, but try to think of your hobbies, your interests, and your world to come up with this answer. Do not think of what the college would like to hear.

Another thing: do not try to focus on the question of the essay, but what you want to reveal about yourself. If you have had a great community service experience, use this question to relate to that experience. If you are a great violinist, use this essay to talk about how much you love music and play in concertos. Do you see where I am getting at? hope that helps you.

Btw, are you korean? Just out of curiosity, since your name sounds a little korean... :)

It's easy to make up something that is completely outrageous or overly idealistic. True creativity lies in being imaginative and genuine at the same time. I almost fell into the trap of likening myself to a Mother Theresa figure in this essay.

haha thanks guys, but no I am not korean..I just heard about general shinseki in a history class last year and decided i liked his last name...and bam, here i am with it.

haha for my 10$ i actually did got creative with it and did an essay but also went out of my way to make a dress out of duct tape (dont steal my idea lol) because i wanted to stand out from the hundreds of other applicants, but then i also dont want to say something that im not. so even tho my essay was kind of bizarre (making a duct tape dresS? and yes i did made it) but i only had one paragraph about the dress itself, and the rest was how it affects me, why and stuff that says more about ME than braggin bout the dress......so like everyone else said, do something that shows YOURSELF, but also dont make it so dull that it reveals notihng about yourself. i mean admissions know when ur BS-ing tryin to get on their "good side" and when ur truly being creative and urself. ^_^ good luck, that question was really a devil to me too, but by chance, i came up with taht idea...i guess u need some inspiration lol

I've also been stuck on this essay. I wrote a rough draft about taking my friends to this place in the park where I found some inspiration. Does that sound like a possible idea or is it too lame?

Also, should we focus on the fact that we only have $10? Should we say where we should spend each dollar (ie the first five dollars were for gas... etcetc)? This sounds so incredibly difficult that it probably should be :

eh, i just wrote what i would actually do on my free day if i had ten dollars - play tennis with my friends, play some guitar, and watch movie with family - i wrote that i didnt use the ten dollars cuz i normaly dont - so my advice is that just write what you would really do, let the admissions officers come into your life aside from school crap.....hope that helps
