Essay length

Hi all, just a quick question...I have two essays that I rather like for the Princeton supplement, but I'm having a lot of trouble getting them down to the 250 word limit (one is 340, the other is 319). If I cut out 60-90 words in each, I'll lose some significant quality. Does Princeton hold it against you if the essays are over the word limit at all, as long as the extra words are necessary to make it a strong and cohesive essay? Thanks!

hey, try and get them below 300 is my personal opinion. I don't think one can tell what the adcoms think, but significantly over the limit, one can make out - I think you should be able to cut out SOME stuff..be ruthless..

Ahh, thanks :) So 250-300 words is alright?

I would say so. One of mine is about 270, and the long one is 520. I wouldn't worry too much. If you look at the other threads for the EDers, you'll see that theirs were almost as long as yours, if not longer.

both of my short ones were a little over 300 words so i think they won't mind too much so long as they're well written :)

OK, I've got one at 300 exactly (lol) and one at 337. This won't get me rejected, will it? :p

if they're well written why are you worrying? ;)

If you're submitting online, then the character limit is 2000.

I'm well under the character limit. Well, the supplement is officially submitted! :)

don't worry about it - all my essays were SIGNIFICANTLY over the word limit - my 150-word statement was 236 words, and I know my 500 word essay was somewhere b/w 700-800 words (and my short essays weren't any better) and I still got in.
