I think a 50 word excess shouldn't hurt you. I mean if you go way over with almost double the words requested then a red flag may go up.

my thoughts are if they ask for 250, they want 250. You may not get hurt for 300, but just keep in mind that the directions do say 250, and it isn't that hard to shave 50 words. For my main essay, it started at 849 and I managed to cut it down to 500, and it turned out to be a better essay in the end.

I made my essay around 450. I liked it. Other people I liked it. I sent it. I really want to go to Duke, so I wanted to justify my stance, with a bit of creativity.

450!!??
That looks too long even for me

No matter how long, they (admin) will read it. I'd suppose that as long as you don't go overboard, (they have a limit for a reason) it is the quality not the quantity that counts. Just don't stretch the limit too far, although it can be tempting to do so :)

I'm assuming you guys aren't filling out the online supplement. It's crazy. It cuts off at 1500 characters, which for me means my essay must be LESS than 250 words.

holy

i didnt know that. thx a lot wrathofgod64
